Lann Personal Quest Act 5 (spoilers, clearly)
Now, aside from the fact I can't get Lann to survive w/o being overbearing for whatever reason, and I refuse to let him die like an idiot - I've read multiple times here that people "help Lann with his chief duties" or something to that effect. How exactly does he get chief duties? In my games Sul is always the chief and remains so.

after you move mongrels to drezen in act 3 sull would always pass chief post to lann in my walkthroughs
idk if that affected by:
1) if you showed mongrels light of heaven (i did)
2) if you let them get corrupted at the end of maze (i didnt)
(i'm sure its not affected by what you do with wenduag then)

i was also being so nice to him that two times accidentally started to romance him, but that's another story entirely :\ the point is, in my walkthroughs i let him confront the demon on his own, he gets stinged, but survives
idk what that achieves plot-wise (its not like he's even very ambushed when you attack him later, or if that drops corruption from mongrels), though, but he survives.

At some point after Sul is in Drezen you need to talk to him and they'll be in an argument about Lann having to become Chief or not. If you push him to become Chief, he will do so. He will later vent about it and you should be supportive.

In addition to this, at some point you'll get a council meeting with a woman with a personal problem who wants to talk to you. If you do, you'll find out it's his mom and you go back and forth a couple of times to fix the relationship.

This stuff is all needed for him to want to survive the encounter in act 5.

I showed the light of heaven on first playthrough, but killed Wenduag in act 3 (she does deserve it, and who wants a grovelling companion who's prone to back-stabbing, but w/e - lol).

Second I showed light of heaven, but gave in to the demonic rage in the boss fight in the maze, recruited Wendaug in act 3, but had to kill her in 4.

In both instances I got him to reconcile with his mother, and in neither did I get the chief option. Both times I have to be bossy and not let him go on his own.

What did you do with Wendaug? I feel it's somehow related to her since I made the "right" choices in the maze on my first game. I guess Sul wants her to be alive but not recruited?

Rurutia wrote a good guide about romancing Lann, which included stuff about his chief duties:

The youtube video on Lann romance is highly misleading. Having spent an entire PL for romancing lann, and succeeded, I would like to clarify couple things that have been misrepresented on the video. Treat it as a minor guide for Lann romance =D

1. You can start romantic relationship shortly after starting 5th crusade, you can hardly miss this as long as your PC is female and she is not too evil.

2. After taking Drezen, take him outside and rest on a map, tell him to read children book to you.

3. After finishing his quest in ACT3, he will ask you for a date, LET HIM WIN, and DONT COMPLAIN. remember to talk to him in Drezen afterward, click those newly appeared ones.

4. His mom will come, its a state event. Help them reconcile, dont be mean, remeber when his mom ask you your feeling toward him, reply "i like him".

5. Now here is the first big step toward true romance with lann. After step4, you need to talk to chief Sull, who should be standing next to Lann. and pass a persuasion check (DC16-20) and encourage him to become the new chief. Then wait for a few days. After this, lann will come to your command room, with three "chief problems" give him advices, for the first two problems, use good-alignment options. for the 3rd one, choose "let the children stay here", dont send them away. Then, talk to him in Drezen, and tell him you dont mind having children with him. (yes, its in Drezen, not in the wild as the video shows)

6. Into the abyss, do his quest, find him outside the tavern, nothing special, barely missable. Just remember to choose the reply smartly.

7. Back to Drezen, now you will need to take another big step toward your true romance. After being lectured by the meanest goddess. Take him outside (yes, outside, not in Drezen), rest with him, and he will have some comments about your choice on mythic path, then he will present you with a gift. Click "Is there a brave, dumb mongral who is going to marry me?", then click "thank you for your gift, but it might be possible that ......" DONT CHOOSE "ill keep it safe" (if you choose the wrong reply you will be forever blocked from true romance).

8. Do his final quest, remember to support him. AND FINALLY after your date he will ask you to marry him, which means you achieve the true romance with lann.

8+. Some ppl might ask, where the etude about writing his mom a letter is; after running toy box for couple hours, and field testing all the possibilities, I would say it is highly possible that this etude has been removed from the game. (Maybe im wrong =D) But the important thing is, this etude is NOT a requirement for the true romance, so dont freak out on the letter.

Good luck with marrying Lann. ;)

if you chose evil option with wendu in act 3 to force her to duck off, she will return in act 5 and you can take her in and she wont betray you later

Ah, I guess I missed talking to Sul then. I talked to Lann multiple times in Drezen in act 3 and also got him to reconcile with his ma.

btw, regardless of romancing lann (which i never did consciously), i feel that keeping mongrel children around isnt any good, since in act 4 the demon with name i cant type will take all the mongrels away
can you imagine? awful. better let them chill in capital

Thanks. So Wenduag isn't relevant at all? I must've not talked to Sul in either playthrough, or picked the wrong options. Can't really remember. :steamfacepalm:

Yeah that sucks, but your character wouldn't know.

I do intend to romance Lann at some point. Dunno when as I'll probably do demon next (which is bound to completely mess up anything regarding poor Lann).
As Sador mentions when you try to push him to become Chief you have to pass (Not sure what stat) a check, and I'm assuming failing this results in failing at the battle as well as I accomplished everything else for Lann except for that check and he didn't survive.

I'm an archaeologist trickster, so I don't fail a lot of skill checks. I reckon I just didn't talk to Sul.

Yeah I don't either but I did happen to miss that one. And yeah not talking to Sul is easy to do I happened to by chance.

I went back and tried it in Act 5, but he has nothing to say. Oh well. Next time :D

Dunno. I helped him with his chief duties and let him die. I don't know what the writers expect anymore. He said he had a plan and he's a smart guy and asked if I trust him Yes, I trust him. Thanks for killing my companion for showing faith in him.

And really don't give me the suicidal want to die in glory crap anyone please. He can die in glory at the last boss.

So of late I have:

- Play OOC to stay Angel
- Play OOC to keep Daeran alive
- Play OOC to keep Lann alive

Whatever... cant care any more.

If he died when you let him do his plan you screwed up earlier.
I turned him down for romance, helped reconnect with his mother, talked him through his chieftain duties, told Wenduag she's too pathetic to serve me, and when time came for his personal finale in act V he carried his plan out and succeeded.
