5 foot step

This may be a stupid question, and I may be missing something rather elementary in nature, but how do you use the 5 foot step option to step away from the enemy? I've tried several different ways, from clicking on where it says 5 foot step to trying to size up 5 feet myself. Both have resulted in my character getting opportunity attacked.

A right-click of the mouse button (by default) will cycle between 5-foot and normal.

Hold down shift and it'll limit your movement to the 5 foot step.

ctrl to cancel the auto lock and move exactly where you want.
