It plays a role, Are you just a blaster?
The walking swarm is a large defence buff if you feel like watching the world burn.
The Trickster plays very well with Wizard/Sorcerer arcane tricksters or even just pure wizard/sorcerer.
Gold dragon is gold dragon so expect it to work with just about everything.
they basically get 5e (dnd) advantage spell penetration and vs saves checks for all their spells making it much more likely for your ccs to stick and then there is another one (zippy magic) that makes all your single target spells effect a second character (hostile magic effects another enemy within x range and positive magic effects another friendly character within x range)
Of note. An enchantment focused character with Best Jokes + Zippy Magic is pretty entertaining to play. You start up 2 "chains" of hideous laughter that sweep through any susceptible foes every time you cast it. Makes a 2nd level spell a 9th level spell IMO.
And spells that go against fort save are a waste of time, fort saves are traditionally a monster's highest. Sure, you get instant death effects and the like, but save or suck is only viable when the save to suck ratio is actually good.
If you want to be breaching enemy defences well, go azata. You get a reroll to get past both saves and SR. Not sure how the reroll on SR compares statistically with a single better roll, but on the saves along it's well worth it.
Blasting just isn't all that good in WotR, the most common enemy types are extremely resistant to it and you're going to have to spend half your build just compensating for that.
Lich is everyone’s go to. Combines with arcane spell book and is a powerful caster (granted it makes an awesome death knight to)
Angel combines divine spell book and has decent magic ability’s
Aeon may not combine but synergies well with a CC/buff/debuff style mage.
Trickster goes with everything
Demon eh of all the ones you have mage ability’s this seems the weakest it has some but it’s biggest pull is transformation so if that’s what your mage does ok then.
Azata and superpowers work for any class mage to.
Swarm works with everything but the way it works fundamentally changes fighting. Class is irrelevant.
Legend is 40 levels so ya it’s awesome. I mean why not be a 20 level wizard/20 level cleric or some insane multi class
Gold dragon….be melee ya they don’t get anything that helps wizards.
Devil I mean you have to be aeon or Azata for most of the game and they get awesome mage utility. But devil is good for cc
