From an roleplay point of view: why help Woljif.
He offers me nothing.
There is zero reason to help a thief.
He doesnt offer to help you.
He ask me to help him solve a problem with his crime familiy.
In the middle of a demon invasion.
Like seriously.
From a roleplay point of view.
Why would anyone help him.
To good characters he is a thieft.
Neutral dont give a ♥♥♥♥ about others.
And Evil is what is in it for me.

He doesnt even offer to help you.
Why would i free him?

Woljif is the weakest link. He is not irredeemable and I will chastise him severely and daily and make a productive member of society of him yet. Further on I (my character that is) kinda becomes fond of the lil schmuck as a annoying -wanna throttle him but care for him- younger brother.

I helped him because I reckoned I could get him to stab people for me.

Because hes a fun loving playful guy? I dunno :)

I'm not really a Woljif fan so I let him do what he wants and dont even include him in the party. He truely is... an outsider :lunar2019coolpig:

Hope of redeeming him, perhaps?

Or simply using his services because he -does- help you, both in fighting for you (if a little reluctantly) and serving as a connection to The Family and helping you "acquire" assorted goods.

Also, "Neutral doesn't give a ♥♥♥♥ about others" is a bit misleading. Neutral is, if anything, "do I feel like this or nah?"

I helped him because I was curious, that's it.

You're trying to work out a way to liberate an occupied city.

Who better to ask than a member of a local crime gang?

That is chaotic.

This. And he's a secondary source of Haste spells...

The thing is.
You can not ask him to help you either.
The only answers i get:
Sure i let a thief out and help him with his problems because apparently that is what nice guys do.
Help criminals.

So far all i hear are meta reasonings.
I ask for roleplay reasonings.

Neutral is trying to be reasonable. Good vs. Evil it's usually 'help people who deserve it' and Law vs. Chaos it's just following the rules that make sense and ignoring the terrible ones.

Also, Chaotic Good is 'you want to help people' and 'you don't care too much about breaking the law', so I wanted to help and didn't care that he was a thief. And I thought I could get him to stab people for me.

He is very poorly written, but this game's writing is not its strong suit.

He shouldn't just tell you that he's betrayed everybody he's ever been with. It makes little sense to take him on when he straight-up tells you he's sold everybody out countless times before. Also, he has 18 intelligence, so he must understand that telling someone (unprompted, no less) that you always betray everyone is not a good way to get on their team.

What they should have done is have him pretend to be very loyal but have the boss of the thieflings tell you his real history - that he always betrays his team. Then that could prompt a fun little crisis where he tries to convince you that he's in it for good this time.

Anyway, this game is terribly written so it can't be helped.

There is no reason if you are role playing as good.

I did just for XP and to have all the companions.

True, but it's still a valid roleplaying reason to release him.

As for other roleplaying reasons...chaotic characters are guided by their whims, so why not release him?

And practical characters might be totally fine with overlooking his petty crimes, since you need allies, and small amounts of thievery mean nothing in the context of a city invaded by demons.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Aribeth gives you this; she points out that she will be able to use the soldiers who are left on guard to help fight the demons. And you get an expendable sandbag who can ostensibly fight. She also says he's not exactly terrible; more of a nuisiance criminal.

PS> I also have no love for how this character is written; I think that, like Nenio, he suffers from a cool idea that isn't executed up to its potential. They both have walls of basically unspeakable text though the voice actress for Nenio is truly up to the task; she's amazing, while the voice actor for Woljif, umm...stinks.
