For resources, I just took all the hundreds of thousands of gold I made selling random loot and dumped it into kingdom management resources.
Only thing I really focused on was building 4 buildings in 2-3 towns so that they could be upgraded to lvl 2 and thus allow me to build teleportation circles in them so I didn't have to spend days walking between them.
Correct
Archers >>> everything else
Marksmen would be but you can't easily get them in bulk
Make sure your general has the cure wounds spell. You can cast that over and over to make sure you dont lose any troops in battle. Everything else is gravy, though direct damage spells are nice to speed things up.
Army wise, make sure you don't expand too fast. With a good army and general, you won't be any soldiers in battle, so it's possible to wipe the map very quickly, and then start unavoidably losing morale because you've already cleared all the milestones you would have needed to take to get your banners green. Then you have to rush to the end of the chapter and that's no fun.
The Sharpshooters do less damage but with high moral/monuments they can acts three times in a row, it's pretty great.
I had the same/very similar feeling. For a long time even I did not know you can build in Drezen. I thought only with the outposts.
My advice based on my personal experience:
1. Go for Mercenaries first
2. Build supply depots wherever and the Engineering Guild to reduce building costs
3. Once the supply lines stands go for barracks and archer ranges, while keeping in mind enough space for the bigger buildings which give adjectant boni.
4. Teleportation circle might come handy since you need to rest a lot in Drezen to maintain a low level corruption
5. Improve stuff steadily
For my army I chose a shield general first. By the long shot it felt like I should go for spellcaster since the effects are much more obvious with direct damage spells. But every general can level up and gain more skills to increase army size and having even attack spells as shield general.
My main battalion structure is clerics, which are really strong and give a strong bonus with smite evil and healing, rangers, and champions plus tank units. The plus comes usually with a more experienced general which allows you to increase army.
By the look you can tell the similarity to a normal party.
Tank (Barbarians, Champions, Shield Bearers)
Damage Dealers (Rangers)
Support (Clerics)
I am still new in Drezen but so far I have no seen any use for a second army. I focus in one single army and keep the rest as reserves, recruiting whatever is available to make the whole bigger. I wish the game would offer more opportunities to level up my weak general who seems doomed to stay weak, since she needs experience to level up and to increase army size.
6. Once you figure out which kind of units you like, check if you need a higher finance income or you want to recruit more. The outpost barracks and training grounds etc. increase the number of units you can recruit in Drezen.
In one battle I hit about 5 different units at the same time and basically did 70k+ dmg as a level 10 general spellcaster in one cast
When you switch generals do you lose all your levels?
Not as far as I can tell. The general keeps their level.
