It should always revive after a rest

Don't animal companions always revive? In the video game anyway.
In reality too! Everytime my hamster died, he would revive within one week! And just like Gandalf the Gray ressurected as Gandalf the White, my hamster would also change color.

Animals are fascinating.

It's part of the core rules kinda. If an animal companion dies you summon a new one with a 24 hour ritual.

Depends on the companion. The paladin's horse should be locked under a 30 days cooldown (but that's because you can summon it and dismiss it when you want). But they didn't do that in the video game so they just gave the same mechanic as the ranger.
