You do realize trigger for tavern defense is completely random, right?

No, it's not. The defence battle triggers after about three days. About three rests in practice. The battle is a nightmare on L3. It's fine at L4 and an enjoyable romp at L5.

Folks are getting into trouble with this battle because they are resting too much. If you avoid resting as much as possible you can reach L5 before this battle quite easily. In fact you can avoid it altogether and complete all the Act 1 missions on two rests and launch the Grey Garrison assault before it even happens, which is actually the most beneficial outcome.

However the game doesn't explicitly tell you this, which I think is a mistake.
I thought that the defenders being ticked off was the guys standing with Irabeth. But it seems like the building themselves where being targetted mostly.

Yep, same here.

Only issue I had with it was the lack of direction towards who you had to kill. And the length of it.

Other than that I steamrolled it at lvl 3.

It does tell you to kill the alchemists, also they are the only ones that actually target buildings.
Where did it say that?

And yeah, that's why I eventually did finish it. I was like, hey, I need those, so I killed em and bam. Quest finished.

Personally I think it would be more intuitive if they added in some dialogue if the game notices you're just attacking the respawning trash mobs.
I got this mission as soon as i left the tavern on core because i talked to anevia or some ♥♥♥♥, what a pain but hiding behind your own soldiers and picking off the pyromancers did the job.
Honestly, the tavern defense should be level locked. You can just rest too much and get it to proc. Which is a problem when your level is too low to beat checks on diseases easily (which are too common for low level) and ability drain (which is too common for low level!) since lesser restoration can be hard to come by early on and cure disease scrolls are expensive for just starting out.

My first play-through I straight up barely survived to lose the fight. My party was all dead from was ability and level drains and half of them were diseased when it procced lol. Spent all of my gold on raise dead scrolls.

Second play-through I had obvious foresight and basically did it at late level 4 with all the companions. Still almost lost since the alchemist were ignoring the swords in their faces and were super into burning everything down.

Yeah, most of my issues with the encounter design is just the lack of information for new players.

Lack of informations ? Its seemed pretty obvious to me that the bomb thrower guys were the one to target, since it was after theyr attack that you could loose "defense points"
I was level 4 and it did not seem to bad. Crowd Control..Grease ( half way between the main gate and Irabeths squad) and pit ( near the stairs) seemed to help alot. The Alchemists mostly just threw there bombs on the buildings. Which I still wonder if that was why my defender count ticked down quicker than it seemed the soldiers by Irabeth where getting killed. Ended up with 4 left.

If it was so intuitive, you wouldn't see people complaining about it so frequently here on the forum.

Hell, in my eyes, it's a defense. What do you do in a defense? You slaughter everyone coming at ya.

I mostly ignored the alchemists because hey! My buildings seem to tank a hit pretty well. I didn't target em til things started getting dicey.
Level 3? wow, I was way past level 3 lol
This mission is currently frustrating me as well. I find it infuriating when one of my characters won't attack or cast a spell for no reason. Other times enemies seem stuck in the terrain. But beyond these bugs I had the pleasure of watching the vaunted Eagle Guard stand five feet away from where my lone paladin, the rest of his party down, solo'd a frickin' minotaur and won. While. They. Watched. Then upon winning the most epic duel a level 3 character has ever fought he desperately tried to stop the arsonist only to be spammed with grenades and dropped. While. They. Watched. Five feet away.

Then I get a speech about how it was a disappointing showing and 'we' have to do better. And to salt the wounds the game is popping up these annoying tutorial messages telling me how to play a game I've run for over a decade. "You have scrolls of cure light wounds! You should use one!"

How about you take this scroll and shove it.... ... ..

Calm.... got to be calm. This game has great potential. But they desperately need to patch some of these bugs and tidy up the logic. Why stuff gets released early and broken I will never understand.

I had 4 defenders left and my entire party..And the Speech was we did real well and casualties where very light..SO it seems like that speech depends on how many of your party survive the attack.
hide behind the guys at the front door
1. Grease the gate and the wooden platform between the rooftops.
2. Dont worry at all if a few single fighters or rogues get through, the NPC lances will one shot them easily.
3. When the Minotaur comes, grease or vine him to slow him down while Lian softens him up. Sneak of rogue and sleep char behind him (have them defending the rooftop stairs before he shows up) to take out the bombers while the rest of your group finishes the minotaur. Again, refer to #2.
4. Seriously, dont forget about #2. The game hints about this when it tells you the arsonists are the most important.
