No, it's not. The defence battle triggers after about three days. About three rests in practice. The battle is a nightmare on L3. It's fine at L4 and an enjoyable romp at L5.
Folks are getting into trouble with this battle because they are resting too much. If you avoid resting as much as possible you can reach L5 before this battle quite easily. In fact you can avoid it altogether and complete all the Act 1 missions on two rests and launch the Grey Garrison assault before it even happens, which is actually the most beneficial outcome.
However the game doesn't explicitly tell you this, which I think is a mistake.
And yeah, that's why I eventually did finish it. I was like, hey, I need those, so I killed em and bam. Quest finished.
Personally I think it would be more intuitive if they added in some dialogue if the game notices you're just attacking the respawning trash mobs.
My first play-through I straight up barely survived to lose the fight. My party was all dead from was ability and level drains and half of them were diseased when it procced lol. Spent all of my gold on raise dead scrolls.
Second play-through I had obvious foresight and basically did it at late level 4 with all the companions. Still almost lost since the alchemist were ignoring the swords in their faces and were super into burning everything down.
Hell, in my eyes, it's a defense. What do you do in a defense? You slaughter everyone coming at ya.
I mostly ignored the alchemists because hey! My buildings seem to tank a hit pretty well. I didn't target em til things started getting dicey.
Then I get a speech about how it was a disappointing showing and 'we' have to do better. And to salt the wounds the game is popping up these annoying tutorial messages telling me how to play a game I've run for over a decade. "You have scrolls of cure light wounds! You should use one!"
How about you take this scroll and shove it.... ... ..
Calm.... got to be calm. This game has great potential. But they desperately need to patch some of these bugs and tidy up the logic. Why stuff gets released early and broken I will never understand.
2. Dont worry at all if a few single fighters or rogues get through, the NPC lances will one shot them easily.
3. When the Minotaur comes, grease or vine him to slow him down while Lian softens him up. Sneak of rogue and sleep char behind him (have them defending the rooftop stairs before he shows up) to take out the bombers while the rest of your group finishes the minotaur. Again, refer to #2.
4. Seriously, dont forget about #2. The game hints about this when it tells you the arsonists are the most important.
