Interesting. I normally prefer turn-based, as it feels more like an actual pen and paper RPG. I'm disappointed that this appears to be a moment, even on core difficulty, where I either have to switch to RTwP or become acquainted with the character death mechanics.

If you want to play turn-based, you must build your characters without ignoring initiative. This means Improved Initiative and Mythic Improved Initiative at least on your casters and hexers (Camellia, Ember, Sosiel, Nenio).

No doubt. 40% chance of not dying instantaneously is better than ~0%.

How do you run away without it killing someone? When ambushed at level 9, I reloaded a few times until I finally got a result where just a single animal companion was dead to the round 1 fire breath. I was disappointed, as I'd been trying to limit my reload frequency. I felt like I was really cheesing this fight, fishing for the right result. I guess I could have continued to reload until my communal resist fire landed before his breath? That would have saved everyone, but is that intended? Is this just a moment that teaches you to deal with casualties?

You can trigger those ambushes without a party. Outside of turn based, you just run immediately back and use a vanish or invisible scroll.
24h buffs. Resistance and protection from fire and you survive the breath attack. Then it's just a question of applying damage. Ember did the most, really with bolstered and empowered scorching rays, ignoring fire resistance with ascended element.

this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid my anti fear spells do nothing to her ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ frightening presence so if i dont take her out in the first round my whole team is instantly feared and fight becomes impossible

Yeah welcome to Owl cats games my friend.

As someone who bought this game on release and played the hell outta kingmaker this is Owlcats MO.
They made WotR specifically with the intent that you are munchkin building your team. Balance in this, and kingmaker really did not/wont happen, until like 1 to 2 years after release.

Even king maker has an asinine amount of issues in it, and gets completely ruined by the final dungeon.
At lvl11 he died in 2 turns because my main char was spawn slayer and I sneak attack critted it for 90+ a few times.

This is clearly a "you" problem. Put the difficulty down if you can't figure out how to cast remove fears and protect from energies.

For cases where Devara ambushes you, you can just run away, next round after you reach exit node she will fly away (In case of fire breath, if for some reason she is planning to do normal attack then she needs to reach you first and then attack once). Quickened wand + Haste really useful here.
For her Fear, having Seelah and spell where she grants her anti fear aura, really helps. Buying shirt that grants fire immunity also really helps.

The +morale against fear effects from the lvl1 spell is enough to deal with the fear effect. resist and protect against energy completely nullifies it's fire damage if you cast both. both are low level communal spells.
