how do familiars work?

So im a sorc and i choose monkey familiar, how does it work? do i have monkey familiar following me around or is it just some passive thing?

It is on your abilities tab. You activate it and the monkey will follow you around and provide it's bonus to you.

Both, it's just a passive but when you toggle it in the action bar tab, it follows you around.

famliars are just a cute way to get some passive bonus. You find them in your abilities after you choose one, where you can toggle your familiar on or off, and if its on, you get the bonus + a cute familiar that is following you.
