Should I play the first pathfinder game before this one?

If you want a less packed intro into Pathfinder as a crpg Kingmaker is a better start, but don't get the idea it's easy or holds your hand, neither game is easy or holds your hand. Wrath of the Righteous throws a whole lot more at you in terms of character progression and building than Kingmaker does. Kingmaker is relatively bug free and polished though, so there's that.

Bears stating that don't go into either expecting something you can just pick up and play without some investment. Owlcat's games are as much Pathfinder PnP simulations as they are CRPGs, which some love but some will just bounce off of. This is definitely one of those games you'll want to play on normal even if you think you're familiar with CRPGs. If you're not familiar with Pathfinder as a system, you've got a lot of learning to do.

If you want to. But you don't need to.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

if you are not in a hurry this game needs patches in the later chapters so might as well play Kingmaker while we wait for those

Only if you actually want to play Kingmaker. You don't need it at all for WotR, so don't play it as "preparation", it's too long for that and a beginner probably has it easier with the WotR tutorials.

Now there are bugs in WotR, Kingmaker had them even worse at release so it will only take some time now for the devs to fix em all. But if you want to play a pretty much bug free game right now, then play Kingmaker.

Yes because it's excellent.

No if you mean for story.

It is disconnected story wise.

It has fewer classes and whatnot though, so it might be easier to get the basics of the rules down in that one then move to this one and try the new classes. Witch seems pretty fun.

Also, if this game is anything like Kingmaker it's going to be a TOTAL mess managing the crusade for a good long time. Whereas kingmakers kingdom mechanics are as fully baked as they're going to get.

They are not sequels. Since this game still has some nasty bugs, you might wanna try the first one since it's a bit more polished.

This one has a lot of cool stuff in it, though!

Not needed, I haven't seen any overlap in terms of story.
Not really a sequel, just the same universe. Unsure of timeline if it's happening at the same time or hundreds of years apart.
But, it's a good game, worth a play.
This game adds more with the mythic paths, so I'd say its more fun so far honestly.
Get this one now, if/when you get bored (hopefully during your third playthrough) try out kingmaker. If you get bored during your first playthrough.. I don't recommend kingmaker.
