Horses need to only come out during combat and outdoor areas
I have a cavalier and it looks utterly ridiculous to have your horse following you around like a lost dog. Walk into an inns kitchen, the horse is there. Wake up in your bed, the horse is there. Walk into a throne room, the horse is there. Walk up to the third floor of a building, the horse is somehow there.

The skyrim horse ain't got nothing on this horse.

If your horse doesn't follow you up to the third floor what do animal companion builds do when there's a fight on the third floor? Or in the Inn?

Defiantly agree. Though i found a few other bugs with Horses and mounted combat that kind of ended my game a bit early. But I gave every companion i had a horse. The inn was FULL of horses just standing around in random places!

Your post gave me a good laught, but you are correct, I would say that the devs could find a reasonable compromise:
L size companions barred from indoors
M size companions only allowed indoors if in dunjeon (shopkeepers and innkeepers would realistically not allow them in)
S size allowed everywhere
Increase in size could be tied to a feat, allowing the player to keep his animal M size if he wants.
