That said i havent messed with this yet to say for sure.
As an Example
A Fighter has 60 hp, but is down to 10 from the days battles
He rests a full 8 hours and recovers 6 hp his HD bringing him up to 16
your cleric has 4 level 1 slots left over from the days battles so he converts those slots into 4 cure light wounds spells, we'll just say he heals an even 15 hp
Your fighter is up to 41 hp
But you have no more abilities or features to heal, so you start the following day with 41/60 hp
If you had the food item instead you wouldn't need the extra healing as it auto restores your hp to maximum.
I think that is how it works.
Either uncheck use spells on rest (not really the point you may as well cook something else if you got spells) or look at the hours needed to sleep.
If the recommended rest is something like 16 hours or up it’s because you are over resting to regain spells to use to heal. If you cook the glowing item you will full heal after an 8 hour rest so you can uncheck recommended rest and choose 8 hours and be fine.
