Think of the slabs as domino pieces. You are placing them so that the ends match the adjacent symbols.
The misleading part is that you need to click the 'hand' nearest a finished piece to put in the next domino, clicking the other end will show you an empty inventory.
It appears that you have to start with the tile that doesn't match either of the two outer tiles. If you do this by accident, then the puzzle seems trivial. It isn't, if you aren't lucky...
I do NOT understand why that's the case. Like, it seems like you should match the ones on the inside - like the dominos they resemble...still, this worked, so thank you so much!
The thing is that none of the 4 tiles you have match both of the outer tiles. You can match one outer tile, or the other outer tile, but never both.
I agree it's a rotten puzzle. Attempting to follow the pattern of symbols shown on the wall just messes with your head.
Didn't help that things glitched up and I was left with 4 fixed floating hands on my screen and no door icon to exit the cave. Oh and I dropped a tablet from my inventory and it disappeared, so I had to reload a save for two reasons
This is a perfect example of a puzzle that is not intuitive or bugged.
There's two rules to this puzzle, one that is enforced (you can only place pieces that match adjacent ones) and one that isn't but the puzzle won't count as solved if you don't follow (a line or row may not contain symbols that don't match the ones outside the grid). What you place on the lines and rows with no outside symbols doesn't matter, though there aren't that many options.
