is there someway to save staunton in the end or am i forced to kill him always?

My understanding is that the Aeon path has a way to go back in time and, with his brother's help, convince him not to give the banner out in the first place. Otherwise, that's it for redemption for him.

There is also a third way : if you're on lich mythic path, he can become an undead companion

On Aeon path do you redeem him far after the battle or there is an opportunity during the battle?

lol I was talking with my friend while I did this part and couldn't stop griping about how ridiculous it was. *looks at bloody trail of dead minatuar and cultists leading up to the room, try to slide past him so I can save both their dumb asses. "NO WE MUST FIGHT NOW, I WILL NOT LET YOU HARM HIM. Can I explain I'm not planning that? Nope.
