potions, scrolls, defensive stance, flanking, summoning magic, debuff spells. buff spells..

higher difficulties require you to use absolutely everything you have available to you for some fights. even then, that fight in particular might require a bit of luck.

i got really lucky and got him first try with minimal buff starting the fight with a cause serious wounds seems to help a lot as it took full damage

Somewhere else somebody else did post a really simple tactic ... and it works.
Just stay out of its range ... its slow!
Kite it and meanwhile kill it with your ranged fighters.
Even works with 2 of them, the tank and 1 damage dealer, is probably even more easy ...

I got nothing but lucky on my Paladin 2handed and double critted him.

I saved and redid it just in case and i kept failing over and over. This was nothing but a case of super luck.

Apply as many de-buffs and buffs to your enemy/party and pray to the RNG dice.

try turn based mode on the fight as well, makes it easier to manage attacks.

At some point in the dungeon you get a protection from Water spell. That may help a lot (use it on whoever is tanking the Elemental). Also a potion of Barkskin. He's harder than the boss of the area, so no point holding anything back. Scrolls of Bless, Scrolls that raise stats (I know there's a +Con scroll somewhere), any scrolls that can buff you. I had Camellia Enlarge Lann for extra damage - it dips his chances to hit a little, but the Water Elemental has damage reduction so it's worth it.

He uses Cleave if he's being flanked, so make sure you're engaging him only with Maximum AC characters. It also really depends on who your MC is. I was using a Magus with better AC than Seelah, so I engaged with him. Camellia supporting. Lann/Wendu pelting him. Seelah supporting/pelting/engaging, depending on your needs.

The main thing is going to be keeping your tank/whoever is engaging the Water Elemental alive. Just use everything you have to raise their AC. Chug potions in battle if you need to. You'll also need to get a little lucky. Don't be shy about resting before that engagement too - you need everything you can get.

To Beat The Water Elemental (without weird tactics and to keep it simple). You need to know how ENERGY damage and acrobatics works. Seelah must alone be at the front (with an AC of 24 or more, potions, cold resistances, and scrolls. Ideally your Camelia is right behind, but not beside her. Plus any two spell casters that deal energy damage. NOT RANGED DAMAGE!! That would take forever. Seelah and Camelia must have acrobatics on. Then Camelia only heals Seelah. Everyone else does Energy damage even if it is 1-3 damage (non-cold) spells. Reminder to lower the targets Attack Rolls if possible. You will win without running around the place at most difficulties. Thought and planning is needed for this fight not running around like crazy as some people say.

Something else to try is to give either Camellia or Lann a couple points into stealth. Sneak past the elemental and further in the room there's a ring that reduces cold damage taken. If you looted everything there should also be a couple of cold resist potions and scrolls in your inventory which will help.

Or kite him around in a circle in the room right before the final boss.

grease and protection from cold works. If you don't have access to them just grab scrolls.
