There are three levers in the basement. Make sure only the one near the barrels is facing upwards while the others are facing down. Then take the shield on the wall next to the guard and push the button behind it. The most significant loot from this puzzle is a +2 CHA headband.

Yes , did it last night . 2 of the levers need to be down and one needs to be up. Then you click the thing above the fireplace next to the guards.

Its way less complicated than it looks at first sight.

I don't see the button. Is it a perception check to reveal it or something?

You need to remove the shield on the wall first.

I get a message after taking the shield, "The button won't budge." The levers are no longer selectable, but the puzzle was solved and the shield removed.

Pressing the Buttons with the Levers in correct positions, opens a door beside Woljif's Cell.
The "Up" Lever is the one in shadows in front of the Barrels.

How are you supposed to find the answer to this puzzle? Is there a hint or just trial and error?

Indeed it isnt but its nothing hat complicated to be honest. There are 9 combinations in total I think.

no, its not complicated. i was just hesitent because i didnt know if you only had one chance to do it. or if it was more involved than it was.

For what its worth solving the puzzle gives you some vendor trash, a +2 CHA headband and a letter indicating that Hulrun was a hardass psycho even before the current demonic incursion.

Hurlun is exagarated in the game for reasons I cant imagine . In the tabletop he "calmed down" after becoming prelate and he was one of the first people falling to defend the city.

But like I said in another post he was never a psycho. The weight on his shoulders was huge, and you will see through the game that the cultists are indeed a huge threat and everywhere . So his paranoia is not so crazy as the game makes you think. Only his extremist methods are an issue , which again should not still be there by the time the game starts . I guess it was done for the narrative.

Honestly, Hulrun in the original AP might as well be a different character from what we get here.

I think 'psycho' is the wrong word to describe Hulrun. His problem is that while his paranoia is well founded, he also let it influence his decisions in other areas, such as what he did to Ember and her father. The letter in the tavern also reveals that Emeber wasn't the first person he treated that way either.
