Rogue + mage in kingmaker resulted in some spells being able to apply sneak attack die which makes some spells even more powerful than wizards can manage, it might have been teh arcane trickster prestige but that's a GREAT combo.
1. You can pick any classes everytime you level up.
2. "Prestige Class" have pre-requisite (some of basics also has pre-requisite, usually alignment), sometimes by matching 2 basic classes you can met this pre-requisite, hence having 3 classes at the same time.
3. Multiclassing is basically a must (at least for me), because some classes just complimented each other (my Spawn Slayer x Rogue Rowdy is just dishing out mad damage late game).
4. You need to plan ahead or understand what classes you're going to pick. Say you want to make a good rogue but also want this rogue be able to tank a bit, so you choose other class that gives spellcasting abilities with illusion spells.
5. You have total 20 levels, once you pick one extra class, you can never reach level 20 class on one class, take that into account.
Good luck!
I shall add that some abilities depend on the level of the class, as perhaps you want to gain a companion but your ranger (not all suclasses) gain one at level 4, then you may get 1 lvl of druid and get the companion spending only 1 level astray of what you are building(have in mind that in this case the more levels with the classes with animal companion trait, the more power it gets).
So, some levels could be reach by getting only a few levels of other class, but some abilities require several levels of such class to become effective (gain power, duration, or extra abilities).
Some even bring inherent spells associated with them,so as RACHMANOVSKI said, perhaps a plan would be quite helpfull.
Hope this help
Have fun
You need some level of understanding of the classes and Pathfinder rules to build nice multiclass characters. If you have no idea what you're doing, then it's better to stick to a single class.
PS I've just noticed the date, nice necro there Bystander.... RPing a Lich, eh?
The builds tend to avoid much multiclassing, but are still Unfair viable. He gives the reasons behind his choices at each level, so you can follow the logic. There's builds for each of the companions.
Also this is a year old topic, why are we still on it? The OP has probably finished the game multiple times at this point, or at least doesn't care about this anymore.
