multiclasses?
Hello.
I noticed, but never used the feature of multiclassing in Pathfinder: Kingmaker. How does multiclassing work? Do I just get the abilities of both classes, but both at lower levels (since I have to split my levels between both)? Or is there more to it? Are there additional skills that I can only use when I multiclass? (E.g. rouge + mage = arcane trickster who then get something additional)

Yes you have to pick another class to level and when you level up after that you pick which one to level. (Unless they use the more archaic method where once you multi class you cannot go back, but I doubt that) you will keep everything from before but have to chose which to level upon leveling. It will honestly greatly hurt the potential of the class but the combination of abilities can lead to other great heights.

Rogue + mage in kingmaker resulted in some spells being able to apply sneak attack die which makes some spells even more powerful than wizards can manage, it might have been teh arcane trickster prestige but that's a GREAT combo.

It's also handy to dip 1-3 levels of fighter if your'e doing a kinetic knight or simply plan to use the blade shape quite often.

General rule of thumb:
1. You can pick any classes everytime you level up.
2. "Prestige Class" have pre-requisite (some of basics also has pre-requisite, usually alignment), sometimes by matching 2 basic classes you can met this pre-requisite, hence having 3 classes at the same time.
3. Multiclassing is basically a must (at least for me), because some classes just complimented each other (my Spawn Slayer x Rogue Rowdy is just dishing out mad damage late game).
4. You need to plan ahead or understand what classes you're going to pick. Say you want to make a good rogue but also want this rogue be able to tank a bit, so you choose other class that gives spellcasting abilities with illusion spells.
5. You have total 20 levels, once you pick one extra class, you can never reach level 20 class on one class, take that into account.

Good luck!

Hi there

I shall add that some abilities depend on the level of the class, as perhaps you want to gain a companion but your ranger (not all suclasses) gain one at level 4, then you may get 1 lvl of druid and get the companion spending only 1 level astray of what you are building(have in mind that in this case the more levels with the classes with animal companion trait, the more power it gets).
So, some levels could be reach by getting only a few levels of other class, but some abilities require several levels of such class to become effective (gain power, duration, or extra abilities).
Some even bring inherent spells associated with them,so as RACHMANOVSKI said, perhaps a plan would be quite helpfull.

Hope this help
Have fun

I think another thing is you do lose caster lv and you are progressing as your selected class so your BAB, HP, saves, skill points, will be gained as normal for that class. Like a wizard will gain 4 HP per lv but a fighter is 6 I think. So your example of arcane trickster you do lose spell lvs and you are firing weaker spells in general. It's balanced out by sneak attack dice but it's something to be weary of as that also lowers spell penetration and everything in this game has SR.

It's not a must, please don't put that idea into players heads. If you have a special build in mind, then yes, multi can be nice, but a single, 20lvls class is not a bad choice either.
You need some level of understanding of the classes and Pathfinder rules to build nice multiclass characters. If you have no idea what you're doing, then it's better to stick to a single class.

PS I've just noticed the date, nice necro there Bystander.... RPing a Lich, eh?

Sorry I forgot to caps lock the "(AT LEAST FOR ME)" part.

You don't HAVE to multiclass. It's possible to beat the game with minimal multiclassing, even on Unfair. for examples, see https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=pathfinder+wrath+of+the+righteous+crpg+bro+

The builds tend to avoid much multiclassing, but are still Unfair viable. He gives the reasons behind his choices at each level, so you can follow the logic. There's builds for each of the companions.

Yes I saw that, no need to be sassy. Doesn't change the fact, that after stating 'is basically a must' puting that in parenthesis doesn't change how it will be recived.
Also this is a year old topic, why are we still on it? The OP has probably finished the game multiple times at this point, or at least doesn't care about this anymore.
