Also, recruiting is very fast if you have the proper infrastructure (you can increase recruitment via edicts & buildings)
Yep. It is also helpful to develop your generals.
There is no need to overdo it though. Playing the crusade part "normally" without going nuts will bring you through Act 3. There is basically no need to stack 1000 archers and the like. The rebuilding phase in chapter 5 can be done in the blink of an eye - I had 1.000.000 gold on my character and could just buy any mercs the market offered.
You get your generals with a delay(2 days) otherwise all your troops are gone, but depending on your path you can get some path specific troops.
