I didn't want to risk it so I turned down the aeon path :steamsad:

Not as far as I know. But the Aeon path is locked out if you don't take his option.

No, it will not be locked.
In fact, there is an achievement for unlocking all possible mythic paths up to when you actually choose your path when using the banner in Act 2.

And just to be clear, you can only choose a path at mythic rank 3.

Imho the wording of the answers up to your pathing choice is so confusing, I can't belive they're still using them. Even after the beta... It only makes sense when you already have chosen a mythic path, but not till then. I've seen a lot of people confused by this.

No choice will be locked for picking Aeon. Only Aeon will be locked if you don't pick that option.

You do however supposedly lose access (or it at least get's MUCH harder) to the secret ending for anything BUT Aeon if you don't have the dagger.

Cheating back in the dagger can circumvent this if you don't mind a little modding.

the secret ending requires 5 out of 7 conditions. You can lose two conditions

Thanks, I thought this is weird. Just reached Act 3 a second time (my Lich is on hold) and I wondered why I still have the dagger despite using the Aeon choice at the Wardstone in this run.
You can select whatever till mythic rank 3 when you decide what actual path to take; up untill that point -- generally the ones you see in act 1 "activate/unlock" said mythic path to be chosen like Aeon, demon, trickster and angel (which is mandatory).

I can remember first time playing this being forced to take the angels sword at the start, i was panicking thinking i'd locked in the Angel path after spending like an hour making a Lich-specific build.

The walkthrough that I referenced when this came up before was quite explicit -- you must still have the crystal dagger in Act 5 to unlock the secret ending, because the whole quest chain using the dagger with the Storyteller (in act 5) starts a quest that you need to complete to unlock the secret ending. If you don't have at the key time, Storyteller remarks on its absence as an opportunity lost (and you don't get the quest and can't unlock the secret ending).

I believe you can retrain the dagger and unlock retain the option for the Aeon path (assuming you didn't give it up earlier), but I'm not sure. But the walkthrough was clear that retaining the Crystal dagger into act 5 is a non-negotiable requirement to unlock the secret ending.

XartaX, have you unlocked the secret ending without the dagger?

Wait, can I still get that special ending if I pick the aeon choice at the wardstone?

No. I've just read in a guide that 5/7 options are required to unlock it (as well as being on a path that supports it). The most popular guide floating around just ensures you have 5 of those options. And obtaining the dagger is needed for you to fulfill that guide. That said, I can't say for sure if it locks you out of the path or not.

Edit: So apparently renegade Aeon (not true Aeon) can access the secret ending. This should mean you don't need the dagger, no? Since you have to break it to become an Aeon.
