DRM free copy??
I purchased the £85 copy here on steam. Kingmaker did not require to run steam, but WotR requires steam to be running, even though it is a DRM free game, also available on GOG..
Did steam recently changed something, because some of the DRM free games are forcing steam app to launch, for example Solasta, Divinity OS 2 and Kingmaker are now launching steam app no matter what ;/
I start to regret that I bought Wotr on steam ;/

EDIT for those who did not know that steam also had DRM free games:

Not even a single game i ever buyed on steam does not reuquire steam client to run.

Some of them work by just starting the .exe without going through the client. They don't advertise it though.

While it won't help you for this game - here's my rule of thumb - never buy games on Steam which are also released on GOG.

It's only DRM free if you get it on GOG. I usually try to support them instead when I can. If you get anything on Steam, you should expect Steam's DRM.

Steam always required Steam.

Always buy on GOG if it's possible. Best shop for customers.

I buy all games I want to use -- relatively -- hassle-free on GOG. Never had any trouble with those.

That's really weird, could you please specify, because I have nothing to say but positives about GOG. They even refunded my over £500 worth purchase, after I wrote them an explanatory email saying I was drunk during Christmas and bought a bit too much and my wife will kill me if she will discover that lol. That really happened it is a real and true story. The only downside with GOG is that some publishers prioritise steam over GOG in terms of sending game updates, but usually we are talking about hours of delay, in rare cases days or a week difference maximum.

Do we have different versions of steam?!? Most of my games can be played without having to start steam. I mean, you have to install the games via steam, but afterwards you just go to (steam/steamapps/common) and you press the .exe. No steam needed.

Only games with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ slave-like bounding, like gta5 do need a constant steam-on duty. About 90% of my 500 games i have on steam does not require it.

And then there is an additional way to play it without online-steam. Just google "how to play steam offline". This was working for Epic games as well.

Could be just a "bug". Why I am saying this? One of the GOG patches made the game unplayable for a few hours since it wanted to launch the Steam app. A modification fixed it before the official patch fixed it officially. Maybe that modification is what you are looking for? Might be still somewhere with the GOG forums.
