Please explain UI elements.

When the game first came out on GOG I played to chapter 9 then quit. I am just now returning to finish it and I don't remember what the two things in the bottom right of the UI are.

OFC there's no fn manual because that's too much trouble to make these days and I do not want to start a new game to go through the tutorial again.

There's 2 icons in the bottom right corner. The bottom looks like a knife and the one above it looks like sugar cubes on fire.

Can someone who remembers please tell me what those things are?
How, when, and why I would use them?
How do I aquire them?
How many of each can I carry?

the knife is self explanatory.. you find knifes throughout the stages and the other one is a like a whip that whacks rats away as a last resort when you dont have a light source

Oh yes, this is quite important: Save your knifes for the secret chests. Never use them in combat, it's not worth it. You might as well think of them as keys.
How many you can carry depends on whether you got the skill to carry more, if you don't you're limited to only one (so yes, this skill should be a priority).
