I'm struggling to get through this game because of how little I care for the characters. They preach "murder bad" and yet this game is set like 50 years after the crusades, and a century before King Henry VIII beheaded a bunch of his wives for not bearing children. Hell, in the 1800s wild west a lot of criminals were wanted Dead or Alive for things like rustling cattle. If those are all "justifiable" reasons for murder, why does my character get ♥♥♥♥, from someone who you are literally saving from danger, for killing in SELF DEFENSE????
In the first chapter when Hugo sees the child getting beaten and immediately runs up to the large men with weapons and tells them to stop, does he think they're going to listen? This game is set in 14th century France, JUST AFTER THE CRUSADES and the bible says outright that beating your children is something you SHOULD do. In fact, by interfering, Hugo is damning his new friend to Hell, which is a lot worse (to believers, which the French were) than a few punches to the face.
"Withold not correction from the child; for if thou beatest him with a rod, thou shalt deliver his soul from hell." Proverbs 23:13-14
According to Hugo it's not okay for me to murder in self defense but it's okay to damn a little boy to an eternity of hellfire.
The fact that your biggest criticism is he's whiny and entitled is a testament to his character and quite frankly probably a little unrealistic.
Any real 5 year old kid would probably turn into a complete psychopath if they were put it his position.
They were actually going to kill the boy for not being where he should have been at the time of attack, Hugo tried to save him, He was reckless on the part of risking his own life, but still...
Amecia was changed in this game to fall in line with their "protector" theme. So the story wasn't about family, survival, or anything like that anymore. It was about being a strong and powerful protector. Well, it flip flopped between the themes, but overall they made her into an angry powerful superhero. Unfortunately this made it "cheesy".
Because if not, then I can understand why this behavior is annoying; while not all kids are like this (or should I say, "as expressive"), at this age, it's VERY common and considered quite normal to "act out", because that's when they discover and start to deal with emotions.
Hugo is a child that is not used to human interactions and has always been "sick", over-protected, isolated. He does not know how to communicate and yet I find him doing it much better than actual 5/6 years old who throw massive tantrums for a wooden stick IRL... while little Hugo is dealing with trauma after trauma. While you you are absolutely free to not care, finding him "whiny" and "entitled" is a bit strong, because he's actually very far from that. He's been treated like a special being by everyone else and he literally voices at one point he wished he was like any other kid.
Now you can dislike someone, but objectively speaking, Hugo is far from being whiny and entitled.
I've worked in a kindergarten, I have several nieces and nephews; and it's actually very normal behavior. Mind you we're probably not from the same country nor do our kids receive the same education.
Main difference for you probably is the setting; Hugo is being treated differently by quite literally everyone he meets, he doesn't deal with other kids (not his choice), he is constantly under someone's watch (not his choice), Amicia is not handling him very well and often disregards his feelings (not his choice again...), he's been a lab rat, he has an immense power despite that same power killing him, he's never had fun, friends, a confident, someone to relate to. He's a product of his environement at this age. If anything, you could totally blame Beatrice for the solitary confinement she put him through at such young age and for hiding the truth to Amicia more than necessary, causing false hopes and worse.
Maybe that's also because you have an entirely different personality, idk. I for one can relate more to him and Lucas than Amicia, Sophia or anyone else.
