Technically you can if you throw a rock at the one without a helm and throw an ignite pot at the other one, but the herbalist ignores you and has no lines if you do.

I spent like an hour trying to save the guy. I was able to save him and keep in the light but he doesn't saying anything. I just want to save him.

The trick is you need to almot kill the guards as quick as possible as they enter the gate. You need to knock the fire near the wagon that the rats will eat the animal. Light up the lamp that is left of the gate door. Throw a rock at the guys head, throw a smoke rock at the guy with helmet and basically run while the rats are consuming the guards. If you lucky you can run pass the rats and light the brazzier that is the right side of the gate door and keep it lit so the rats don't attack the herbalist.

Yet he doesn't say anything and you can't go through the gate door. I kept reloading it to get right. Annoys me that they didn't have any dialog or something if you did manage to save the guy.

The game doesn't mean you to save him, so that is pretty much a glitch then. Otherwise they could have put at least an achivement there

Yeah this seems glitchy. The way to save the guy is to approach the door head on so that you've a clear shot of the lamp post at the moment the herbalist walks in. But that makes you exposed to the two guards, which you have to kill pronto. Except, even if you succeed, it seems like nothing happens. You can walk up to the herbalist with the door open and he won't talk to you, and you can't go through it.

Maybe you have to wait until the door closes before you do the rescue operation?

This is ♥♥♥♥ design. Either don't give us a choice at all or let us save him, don't put in scripted crap like this in an "immersive" game. Because I'm breaking my immersion repeatedly trying to do what the devs deemed impossible, even though it is doable, though barely.

Got really annoyed by this.

EDIT: The game even tells you to save him! You get an objective "Save the herbalist"! ♥♥♥♥ you, devs!

EDIT2: Glad the majority of the game is great though, makes it easier to forgive such annoyances. Not forget though.

Well its kinda obvious tho. There is no real way. even if you kill the guard, he will drop the torch. There is no other light near by.

Also after that, the following scripted events make it clear, its not possible.

The "objective" is sort of the initial idea anyone would have in this situation, which is try to safe him.

Yeah, you can save him, but he just stands there sobbing in the light of the brazer near the level exit.

They need you to get to the herbalist shack.
But can someone explain why there are a few pots hanging from the trees?
I shot 1 down, not nightsahde...

They were glowing like the clasps for the deer meet.
None would come down.

That moment is meant to reinforce the hopeless vibe, and the age old addage of "no matter how hard you try you can't save everyone".
