Alchemy is just one of many skills, not very important nor useful. Some elements of it are reserved for high end game (like imbuing your weapons with salves) but that is soooo far out from when you start.
The restrictions for priests have been somewhat loosened in the past. Priests can now build stuff (create items or plan walls, continue building them), but they are not able to improve items - which means crafting your own weapons, armor and tools will not work as a priest. They are also in no way like casters in other games. You can cast spells, but your faith, which is kind of your mana in this game, regenerates a lot more slowly, so you will still have to rely on other weapons or other players to help you out. Enchanting something with your spells can also be a very slow process, but might later on be lucrative.

As the others have indicated... skilling is very deep in WURM and for most spells you need to become a priest.
Sorcery has opened up as an option to becoming a Priest: https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Sorcery and might be a good goal for those that do not want the Priest limitations.

Do you have karma already?
I think otherwise the option will not be showed.
