Some games i've tried that do cover some aspects of Wurm are Valheim, Ark, Minecraft, Life is Feudal
Like I'm not sure exactly how they could do it. But I bet merged all the servers into two, then having more population on these two servers would boost the popularity enough, timed with a few good updates, you could see a healthy development head for this game.
I can tell though the problem is letting go of the old servers. For anyone who doesn't know, it's not region based, it's just these maps have existed for years, but very often what you see is the history of old abandoned settlements, which adds some interesting mystery.
i like empyrion and have been playing it on and off since forever but it kinda has the same issues with devs taking forever to deliver.
both games are ambitious projects aimed at a little niche customer base so i guess its only natural and unless someone like bill gates gets hooked on the game and decided to fund development, i dont see this changing anytime soon.
i too would like a better wurm like game to play, but yea, theres not really any good substitute. so i went wurming IRL instead. if anyone want to join my deed i might be persuaded^^ could use a good carpenter and a mecha handcart mechanic. and ofc lumberjacks, could use a whole raid group of lumberjacks here.
The game is done, there's no reviving it, but it won't die either. It's stubborn. There will always be those 50 people with 12 alts who keep the game alive. I still come back to it once in a while. It's the only game to play while you're doing research/studying.
It's a maddening/crazy experience where you meet the best of friends, but neither of you can stand grinding any longer and eventually... one of you disappears. Signs get posted, "Where are you? my Best Friend?" and silence. Nothing but a graveyard of deeds for miles. Only griffin in chat talking to himself. The game has seen better days, but it's still a game I love. I just can't bring myself to give it money anymore.
I know i sound like a doomsday person but honestly... I'm that guy that loved you dearly, but you never changed the problems in our relationship, and I just can't forget you but I also can't forgive you. I keep coming back now and then, every couple of months... lingering to the euphoria you used to give me. I love who you are, but can't be with you. I'm sorry my love, but you are nothing more than a fleeting memory I adore.
I love the game but i gotta say, even when I started playing it around 2008 it was already fairly well known at the time as a grind fest for people who wanted to do something while playing TV.
I would assume anyone who did not like such a thing would not play the game. it would be a bit like playing COD but one does not like action.
Wurm is really a sub culutre of a sub culture of gaming, its really not for the masses and I like it as it is.

Life is Feudal
Rising World
A Tale in the Desert
These are the only similar games out there. I know there's some still in development.
For a space version Dual Universe and Starbase offer a lot of creativity
A tale in the desert is equally grindy and crafting complex but it resets every few years and it is pretty impossible to get forward without a group of player and there is a very small player base only.
You could even look at Ark: Survival and join a free private server, but it has no terraforming and is less complex in crafting.
Could play Mortal Online 1/2 if you want a worse experience than WU/WO
probably because it has even less players than Wurm does.
