There are two types of rescues. The ones that happen inside the main story are automatic; you just send an undo or revival herb rather than going out exploring. The other type happens in dungeons that aren't the main story. I haven't done one yet (just beat the story today), but I'm told those are the ones you actually have to go out and explore the dungeon to complete the rescue.
You start from the top menu and input "Rescue" -> "Wanderer Rescue -> "Receive Rescue Request". That's where you'll enter the code. Then you go into the game where there's a gentleman in the hotel Nekomaneki who will give you some instructions. That's where you pick the herb you're going to send in the first variant.
After that, you'll have to suspend again (to get to the top menu) and "Send Revival Spell". It's a good idea once you've done that to go back to wherever the original request was made and mention you completed the mission. That way other people aren't wasting their time trying.
