-Reloading the game (saving and exiting then going back in) refreshes the vending machines. You could just do that several times until you're done (there's a particular large vending machine that gives eight cans instead btw) or you can mix it with the other option
-Rob cans from humans. Near the end when I didn't feel like reloading I just started stealing cans from the people walking by and recycling them. Humans with briefcases also occasionally have a can inside that you can recycle but it's less reliable than just hunting down humans already holding a can
Took ages but I managed to do it with these two methods.
Yep, just headbutt the vending machines (zoomies) to make some pop out.
For the last 30ish I camped in the corner of the map near the grocery store. I found that a lot of the NPCs actually spawn in that area and start strolling by. I would just stand in the street facing that corner and wait for NPCs holding cans to spawn. They'd randomly appear in clusters of two or three. I'd trip them all, collect their cans, then wait for the next batch to spawn. Whole farming process didn't take long. Maybe 40 minutes at most.
