Attempt to drink it yourself first, a voice tells you to stop, stop, talk to the guardian specifically asking who your companions are, then drink it yourself.
His dialogue didnt change, and I didnt have a voice stop me when I went to stop drinking. Just said, 'something is holding me back, is it just fear' and talked to the guardian, his dialogue didnt change when selecting who are my companions. Went back to the goblet and drink it myself and it still lead to game over.
When you talk to the guardian after not drinking the first time, ask about your companions->ask about how many companions you have->ask if they can drink. Then drink from the goblet yourself.
Thank you. That worked.

It's one of the first hints that the player character is controlled by a "visitor," a type of extra-universal entity that's present in Memoirs and the previous game, Singularity: Tactics Arena. Who they are not explained yet. I assume most players just think it's some meta thing.
It's actually more worldbuilding. But it's also meta too.
