Can save files be shared?
Is it possible to share save files with a friend? Or are they "locked" to your personal steam account/installation?

I've been meaning to look into this. If they still use the generic PSX save block format, and it's in a file that can be interpreted, your saves could be extrapolated or injected.

But I don't know the specifics.

Edit: Okay, I did some poking into it, and the files where it keeps your save are absolutely just PSX memory card blocks. Toss those files between friends and their characters will pop up, as long as you have them named properly so they don't conflict. (No I haven't done the science of how precisely to name and edit them to be read properly.) In fact, you should even be able to take a save from PSX (if you have the tools to, most easy would be just if you had played on emulator) if you get memory card managing software and organize a card file with the expected ordering and placement of the blocks. I can't guarantee that will work with no issues whatsoever, but in theory it should be doable.

Could this mean this might be a straightforward port or emulation with "remastered" assets injected?

To an extent, it stands to reason. Basically every remaster is like that, so it's hardly any kind of new poor practice. It's standard. I think a lot of the performance problems people are reporting aren't related to their PC being pushed too hard, but a naive attempt at emulating PSX lag that's not taking into account how much more content can render on bigger resolutions.

And perhaps (ab)using blocking I/O to dynamically load certain assets during play.

I'm interested in this. I do have a PSX save handy from an emulated playthrough last year, but I couldn't quite get it to work in the remaster (the save was listed as a corrupted save), granted I hardly know what I'm doing. Main thing I've noticed is that the new save files are 24 KB, while the original PSX ones are 16 KB. Not sure what's been expanded or added save-wise, but apparently the pet data (found via the names) got pushed down into the new block.

I did some poking into it, and the main difficulty I've run into is checksum issues. I isolated where a lot of the particular data is, and also a region that changes arbitrarily between saves, which is most likely what's used to evaluate that checksum.

I am unfortunately not a whiz on how to manipulate that, but in theory you can just take a fresh remaster save, figure out where the pertinent data starts and ends between the two, copy over said data to the proper place, and then, do ??? to make the checksum come out at the expected value.

This is about as much as I can offer. You're free to do some science if you like, but you'll at minimum need a hex editor to be able to see the data properly.
Sorry for the huge necro but...

The steam save files can be shared :megamanjump:

I'm looking for a save that is close the the lvl 99, and also one that is close to getting all the techs

I have a 450 offense sword save file, with all the itens used to craft in almost max amount, seeds and etc, also, really high OP equipment, perfect for No Future Mode

Reason: I want the remaining four achievements, but i don't want to spend that much time in it lol :P5R_Hero:
