Revised Pet Feeding Guide
Since someone said some pet data has been changed from the base game, I'm revising pet feeding. Anyone interested in a guide? If we have enough interest, i can dig into some revised feeding guide.

Working on it. We know a stat can't go up more than 3.75.
Now, about defenses, do you remember if there was a limit to defense increase (STK,SLA,THR,MGD) in the PSX game?

I have found that the maximum increase on the defenses here is one per level. Say, if you feed a pet 3 cabbadillos, you are wasting potential. I can see this clearly from my tests, but could any of you also confirm this for me? I am going to work now.

That was also in the PS1 version. Take a look at https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/256525-legend-of-mana/60877541#5 (and the mentioned post in there) for more details on defense increase/limits.

Thanks my friend. Glad to have it confirmed. I'll run a lot of tests from now on, but the basic guide is ready. I'll post the link when available.

The maximum growth for defense values per level is not 1 but 1.75.
In other words, the max stat points a pet can gain on level up is 3 with the max remainder of 0.75 which carries over to the next level. This remainder is then applied before the pets natural growth rate and is therefore subject to penalties from produce at the next levelup.
The same thing applies to defense values, only that the limit here is 1 point growth.
So for example, if you feed 3 Cabadillos to a pet (on level 1) with natural growth rate of 0.25 for strike defense, it will receive 0.25 (natural growth) + 3*0.5 (Cabadillos) = 1.75 points to strike defense (raising strike defense by 1 on levelup).
If you repeat that for the next level (feeding another 3 Cabadillos) you will end up with 0.75 (the remainder carried over) + 0.25 (natural growth) + 3*0.5 (another 3 Cabadillos) = 2.5. Since you can't get more than 1.75 per levelup in strike defense, you end up getting 1 point to strike defense, 0.75 remainder for the next level and a 0.75 wasted effort.

About personalities, you can have more than 1 personality on a pet. Some produce has a chance to gain (or loose!) a specific personality. You can simply save before feeding and load again. Sometimes you get it, sometimes not. I don't know if there is a limit to how many personalities you can gain within a single feeding (1 to 3 produce). So far I never got 2 personalities in one levelup/feeding. That may be because of poor qualitity produce I used to test :).
I used 1x Bellgrape (bigger chance to add "scheming" and remove "friendly" personalities) and 2x Diceberries (low chance to add aggressive personalitity).
Mangolephant gives (bigger chance) aggressive and arrogant, but is hard to come by. Idk. if e.g. 1 Bellgrape and 2 Mangolephants would potentially give you Scheming+Aggressive+Arrogant personalities in one feeding. 2 personalities in different feedings are possible (got a scheming+agressive rabite). Have not tried to get 3 or more yet. Maybe some of them are conflicting? Anyway, don't have the produce right now to test.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll put this to test ASAP.

Remember guys, I just posted the most basic guide just to give an initial idea of pet feeding, i will now try 3 diets simultaneously in order to do the revision of the diets.

in the link I posted earlier, TFMurphy mentioned some of the personality changes:

Okay, so I was curious about this, so I dug out my old PSX saves and debugger. Now, I can't guarantee there aren't other ways for pets to gain personalities, but the Pet Raising Guide Malchar linked to is accurate in that as soon as you leave the barn, personalities can be added/removed based on what you just put in the pet's feed box.

The problem with this is that, at least in the US version, it's hideously bugged. What should happen is that each Produce has a list of Personality IDs that determine whether that Personality is added or removed. 0 to 7 are Personality IDs to be added, 8 to 15 are the same 8 Personality IDs to be removed.

The problem is that the code used to determine whether a Personality is added or removed checks the Produce ID instead. This has one big unfortunate consequence: Only Bellgrapes, Diceberry, Mangolephant, Loquat-Shoes, Pear o'Heels, Squalphin, Citrisquid and Springanana can add personalities; and only Peach Puppy, Apricat, Applesocks, Whalamato, Pine o'Clock, Fishy Fruit, Boarmelon and Rhinoloupe can remove personalities.

This is very unfortunate, because if means that via this method, some personalities are simply impossible to get or remove.

So the actual list would be something like this:

Bellgrapes: 25% chance of gaining Scheming
Diceberry: 12.5% chance of gaining Aggressive
Mangolephant: 25% chance each of gaining Aggressive and Arrogant
Loquat-Shoes: 12.5% chance each of gaining Scheming and Lazy
Pear o'Heels: 12.5% chance of gaining Arrogant
Squalphin: 12.5% chance each of gaining Friendly and Lonely
Citrisquid: 12.5% chance of gaining Scheming
Peach Puppy: 12.5% chance of removing Scheming
Whalamato: 12.5% chance of removing Aggressive
Pine o'Clock: 12.5% chance each of removing Aggressive, Calm, Scheming and Friendly
Fishy Fruit: 12.5% chance of removing Scheming
Rhinoloupe: 12.5% chance of removing Calm

Calm and Indecisive are not in this list, so it would seem to be impossible to get those personalities via this part of the code. If there's another way to gain pet personalities, then perhaps that would give a chance of getting them. You'll also note that personalities weren't supposed to be "difficult" to change -- the chances are usually 12.5% to 25% per Produce used (with Applesocks actually being an outlier that should've had a 50% chance each of adding Calm and Indecisive), but the bug makes it far more restrictive.

Also, I'll confirm that the FAQ that h3lblad3 linked to is wrong about stat increases. The US version doesn't seem to have any differences in pet stat boosts at a casual look: Toadstoolshed definitely doesn't add LCK, and Mush-in-a-Box has no effect at all.

I don't know if this is a bug unique to the US version. It's possible that pet personalities worked fine in the original JP version.

ok, so testet now with Squalphin produce and got a scheming, agressive, friendly and lonely rabite (4 different personalities). I tried Pear o'Heels after that and also got arrogant personality (5 different personalities in total). I think this rabite is now a bit messed up :).

more than 2 will have the pet just wandering about at random choises of battle: IE: he chooses to attack, then suddenly chooses to retreat then again to attack and so on.
For tanky just choose somewhat coward tendencies...for attackers choose scheming and agressive.

As long as you don't chose friendly/lonely/lazy, the behavior is fine (for offensive).

Guys, my PC is broken. I'm going to fix it to test the personalities, post the lvl 99 pet and check the secondary stats with more depth, but the guide should suffice for now for the basics.

Looking to update the guide now, thanks to some feedback on the guide :)

Confirmed you are correct.
Confirmed Bug Meat stats have not changed.

Changed information provided in the guide and detailed the tests made.
