How does co-op work?
I've never played the original, don't know anything about the game itself, just looking for a coop to play with my spouse.

Found a forum post from 2002 that explains it: https://www.neoseeker.com/forums/864/t97578-how-you-play-with-friend/

Short answer: there are a few different ways that let the second person play characters from other saves files or as already existing companions but the earliest/easiest way for 2 players is by going to the innkeeper in the first town, Domina, which lets the other person play as the main character you didn't pick from your save file.

As far as I saw on the videos on youtube, you go to options, activate the second player as a controlable character there, and then if you have a party member he will only move if another controller is recognized by the game and someone else plays with him.

In the original, you can go to a certain house in Domina (the 1st town) and invite your friend's Character (from a savefile on a memory card inserted into the playstation) from there and the 2nd player can control that. Otherwise, it's as others have said, they can also control the NPC you're currently teamed up with.

Its not stupid, its very easy. Literally the first town, walk to the church and you can get a way to play with another character on another save file. You ask about the abandoned house then you visit it. Also you can walk into the town and bar and get Elazul for the quest, or go to see Niccolo for his quest.
Huh.

From what I remember, you can create another character on a second save file. That character can then join the current player, and will load in with the stats and gear they had on their save. From what I recall, though, they will not be able to level up or change gear/etc. They are static in that regard, so you may have to take turns save swapping to level up both characters.

Not every mission is going to have a co-op NPC join you, so to make the game fully multiplayer, you'll need that 2nd save. (At least if it still works as it did on PS1)
