So no character creation or even customization......
I was thinking about this for some time and the only reason i could immagine is
1. Story
2. Puzzle combat

1. Story : i understand that it ist neccessary for your story. However this also kills replayability as noone plays a game for the "Story" if he allready played it once.

2. Puzzle Combat: this is my more pressing concern. I played "capes" recently and it was clear that the combat and encounters where designed with specific character and abilitys in mind. Meaning that its basically a puzzle what to use when and not a tactical combat.
It plays more like commandos where you need to use specific abilitys in certain combinations.

Have to say this "Puzzle combat" is so unmotivating that i had to refund the game since you dont play tactical this tons of options but rather think about what did the encounter designer have in mind?

@devs Could you make a statement here so we know what to expect?

the dev's dont need to make a statement, this is how they choose to make their game and they don't have to add it if they don't want to. Its weird people such as yourself are incapable of enjoying a game unless you feel represented in it, been seeing that pop up a lot recently especially in ""games journalism""

you can either enjoy the game and accept such things do not matter or go off in a huff and play something else

I agree with the OP. The store page should set clear expectations, otherwise, the players might be disappointed. As is, with the Owlcat as the publisher and the "carve your own" in the second sentence in the description, it looks like a turn-based Pathfinder in alternate history/steampunk Japan.

Ii would be preferable if it was clearly communicated whether the game is primarily a tactical game with a linear story, predetermined protagonist, and the main focus being on the combat "puzzles" or an actual CRPG with story-affecting character customsation and branching choices, like WotR.

i will have to agree the store page its a bit misleading with the "Your Story, Your choice" in wich its not true, this isin't the player story its Satoru and Akira, you just a spectator that help them decide their path.

I'm probably gonna get :steamsalty: for this but...If you're only going to play as an Asian in an Asian setting, your options will be limited in character creation... :steamfacepalm:
I mean, anything other than that could break the immersion...

With character creation is not meant Appearance. Of course you are Asian. Noone sane would ever want to create... lets say a Black Samurai. But thats not what i meant. Its actualy about character class, and stats and so on...... its about making the character you want to play.

But the more worrying thing is the puzzle combat. My fear is that you cant creat characters because the whole combat ist not tactical combat but a puzzle that needs certain classes and ability to be solved. Basically abit like Commandos in turnbased or the recent released game "Capes".

The story takes place after the Perry Expedition, so a non-Japanese PC would work. Granted, it would require much more effort to implement in terms of the story's reactivity (i.e. NPCs should react differently to a foreigner PC), so it is very unlikely to happen.

Things many of us with lives don't care about in the slightest, number 857 - replayability.

I am never playing any game twice. I just don't have time. I have over 3,000 games on Steam alone, and, at least, 1,000 more on other launch platforms.

Give me a great game and a decent ending and I am happy and so are millions more like me.

Statement?

Well personally I have 3 statements from Owlcat game:

Kingmaker
Wrath of the righteous
40K Rogue trader

And you talk about replayability. A good story, even if it is a book, a movie, or a game. If it is good you will rewatch/replay/reread it.

Pretty soon I will replay Wrath of the righteous and Witcher 3 too. As long as the story is good I prefer that over any open world without any story. I don't care about character creation. When a dev creates a good main character I don' t want to create mine to look different and I am not alone:

Mass effect Shepard
Gerald of Rivia
Cloud Strife
Naruto
Monkey D. Luffy

The list goes on and on
