So the original Final Fantasy 4, 5, and 6 had a lesser known feature of multiplayer. In the config you could assign different characters to the first or second controller and actually have two players helping during battle. I understand this isn't the most used feature for sure but anyone know if it remains in the pixel remasters? A friend and I would love to play these together

As far as I'm aware, that feature only existed in the original SNES cart (the one that said "FF3" on it) and the PS1 re-release.

Though, idly curious - how exactly did you anticipate this to work on the PR's? It's not like they connect to the internet while you play them...
Exact same way you used to play video games with a friend and how it worked back on SNES. sit down with a friend next to you and two controllers, go into the config and assign characters to each player. not every multiplayer game needs internet, though i understand these days most multiplayer games are online. however couch co-op games still exist and come out, it tends to be easier to make a game couch co-op then online co-op and there's many programs that allow these games to still be played over the internet. Parsec, and Steam Remote Play being the most popular.

Unfortunate, though understandable they didn't bring it back.

Theoretically, if your friend were physically in the same geographical location and you're both using the same exact computer, you could still "pseudo-replicate" this effect on the PR's.

Just plug two controllers in. I don't think the game is coded to differentiate between inputs. So one controller = infinity controllers. Just be cognizant of which person "controls" which character and/or party, and have them be the ones pressing inputs when those characters/parties are active.
I'll see if they wanna give this a try, could work! And it'd be a lot better then using a Final Fantasy III rom. Not a fan of the translation, or the lack of Blitz inputs

For that matter, even if the game doesn't recognize multiple controllers (I think it will, but I don't know that for certain), just pass the one controller between you. It's not a "perfect" solution but it seems more elegant than relying on emulators.
We were going to play over Parsec, not physically in person unfortunately. Otherwise yeah we would do this likely, though we'd have to set the ATB to slow lol
