Walking speed - why the 80 pixel per second design choice?
Just curious why the Devs decided on 80, when the original game had 60- is it just to facilitate quicker traversal and gameplay, or is there more to it?

Quoting from FFPR tool's github page, "Set the walking speed to Classic (60 px/second) or Fast (120 px/second). This can greatly reduce walking stutter as the original game's 80 px/second doesn't match the framerate of the game."

The side effect of this decision of 80 pixel/s speed is a distracting screen tearing, that was mostly resolved (for me) by enabling Vsync and triple buffering alone, but I tried the FFPR tool anyway. And the walking speed of 60 that FFPR tool set felt more 'organic' and suitable to me.

What are the community's feelings on 80 vs 60 speed, if there was no screen tearing on either? What walking speed do you prefer, and your reasons. Thanks!

Unless I'm in some sort of timed and/or precision section where stepping in the wrong spot will have adverse consequences, my default preference is to traverse as quickly as possible.

Can get behind that reasoning, and I suspect that was one of the reasons for the dev team to speed up the movement a bit. The imagery of Sonic running across 2D FF maps sure got me smiling- thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this.

AFAIK it had something to do with the introduction of diagonal movement, but I honestly don't know if that's true or just hearsay.

Thanks, that is interesting. The diagonal movement does make the movement more pleasant.

60 speed feels really smooth in this game. What a great tool. I hope they update it to fix Final Fantasy IV.

It does. I also tried the scanlines or 'classic' filter and after the initial apprehension, I like it very much- it smooths over the rough edges of poxels quite nicely. Together with the smooth movement- I like the 60 more just as you do- the game leaves good first impressions.
