I knew someone would say something like it. It's not my purpose at all.
That said, 6's story and characters are amazing, for such a large cast they're all really varried in personality and actions.
Side Note: FF6 is not my overall favorite.
I thought that the story and presentation was overall one of the better ones woven together until FF9. And then maybe until FF10. After FF10, didn't think too strongly of the story or presentation of the other offline FFs until FF7 Remake.
And then characterization of FF6 was overall pretty good for its time and pretty much up there with 9, but perhaps not as much as 10 or 15.
The team building and customization, I did think FF5 did better at the time. While I do see the merit of FF6 revisiting unique character abilities (similar to FF4), but with some customization via the relics and esper / magicite system without any significant JP investment.
But would be curious to know if FF6 was someone's favorite Fantasy AND it wasn't one of their first two Final Fantasy games.
My personal favorite is FFIX followed pretty closely by FFVI. However I've always put more stock behind character and world building than I have customization. The likes of FFIII, FFV, FFX and FFXII are some of my lesser liked games because I feel each of them sacrifice a bit of what I like about a title for their more custom built experience. Doesn't mean the games suck, but it does mean I think a little less of them personally.
If I had to point out why 6 is the best even though this and that FF did this system or that system better, it's because everything 6 did, it did well. It has no low points, it has no aggravating mechanics, and there's nothing in it that I wish it did better. Its just a solid game with a great story and a great soundtrack.
I didn't see your opening post as bait, especially in context with the rest of what you wrote.
Although, they may be precisely the people that specifically love FF6 the most. And it's a shame in a way, cause I did want to hear them regaling down memory lane on the game as it were.
Is FFV more replayable? Sure it is, because it is more customizable. You can run it in many different ways depending on the jobs you might want to specialize in (even though in the end, you always end up playing the same ones if not on a Fiesta run). FFVI characters are more set in stone, and thus you replay the game for other sorts of challenges, and to see the story (which is miles better in every regards to V).
Unfortunately, I believe all future Final Fantasies dropped into this huge melodramatic hole where you spend hours watching some guy (and in a few cases, girl) brood as their entire campaign story. FFVI, due to its design, is a bit distant from that, but you can definetly notice since IV that's where they actually always have wanted to go. VI is saved just that melodrama is evenly distributed in the story.
In the end, your favorite Final Fantasy will probably be the one you played first and the most.
