They remastered the pixels, not the game logic. :^)
Not sure if this was still present in any of the remakes but in the SNES version, there was. I encountered this just recently, so I know for sure.
It's an interesting design philosophy that leads to a code like that. The idea is that the player might not keep track of their inventory well or consider that Edgar is the only one who can even equip these items, so may as well stop the player from screwing themselves over by buying things that they don't need anyways.
...not sure if they actually don't need it, though, since you can wager items in The Coliseum later in the game, which might actually give a reason to have more than 1 of these.
