Tunnel Armor has certainly been able to sneak in a spell while selecting Runic. It sucks when it happens, but in this version you can use the Autobattler to minimize that chance.
Yep, definitely had many spells sneak past Runic in the originals all the time. BUt really you should just be grabbing the Thunder Rod in the cave and breaking it on its face anyway :/
What level were you?
I assume "Lethos" is "Lesser Lopros".

Lesser Lopros's AI has always used fireball on turn 3.
Tunnel Armor is also another fight that has always been very dangerous, to the extent that several of the guides on gamefaqs recommend grabbing the thunder rod to use it on it.
Ummm... BS?
