FINAL FANTASY V

FINAL FANTASY V

Should I go for this, or a Rom?
My main hang up with this one is that it’s missing content.

go for the gba rom. more content the better.
when i bought this a long while ago (has it been years? feels like years) i assumed it had the gba content as i thought it would be a dumb move to remove content in a re release.
...but no no... they removed the gba content. and yeah. go for the gba rom. this version is not worth your money.

The store pages for all 6 games went out of their way to clarify that they were based on the original releases and would not include most, if any, of the content and features added in later releases. In fact, this was a huge point of discussions before any of the Pixel Remasters even came out.

That said, as someone who loves FFV to bits, and has spent the most time with the GBA version, the content added in the GBA version is awful and I'm glad it's gone. It was needlessly tedious, grindy, and is only accessible so late into the game that you don't even get any time to use any of the jobs you get out of it, save for the final dungeon, basically.

Just because one version of a game has more content in it than another does not make it superior. It might be preferable to some who happen to enjoy said content, but it doesn't inherently make versions without it not worth purchasing. For some, sure, and it is worth noting that this version of the game doesn't include the extra jobs, dungeon, and superbosses that were in Advance and the old Steam/mobile versions, but FFV was already a complete experience before that.

And, again, I think the extra content Advance added (Not counting the bestiary, new translation, or sound test, which are all in this version), was actively bad and I think the game is better for not having such annoying content in it, but that's just my opinion.

If the OP cares about the extra content regardless of its quality or functional application, then by all means, Advance and the old Steam version are the way to go. They're perfectly serviceable versions of the game to play. FFV is still FFV at the end of the day, regardless of which version you play. Even the Anthology version, as much I hate that one's load times, miserable English translation, and weirdly butchered audio.

tl;dr I'd recommend the Pixel Remaster over the other versions, unless you really, really want to see the bonus dungeon for yourself. The extra content from Advance and the old Steam version are not very good and abide by very different design philosophies from the rest of the game because a different team made them, but you're certainly not losing anything by playing those versions.

even if its bad. its still content.

even then its practically post game content.

it just. idk. it just feels pointless to remove content. no matter how old or bad it was.
i do see your point but... i just.
removing content just feels wrong.
it makes it even worse when they outright removed the old versions that had the content.
if the old steam release and this remaster were both on the store. i wouldnt have a problem.
but its the fact they removed the old one that gets me.

If we consider FF's to be peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

FF4 as we know it, and what the PR gives us, would be a pb&j that forgot the j. You just have peanut butter. It's incomplete. It's not the entire artistic intent. This is because the bonus content they "added" to the GBA release, was all CUT content that was ORIGINALLY supposed to be in the final game. They scrapped it all prior to release due to space + time constraints. So we wound up with peanut butter instead of peanut butter + jelly.

As a result, when FF4 doesn't have the bonus content, I consider it an incomplete game IF we are talking about "original dev intent." We got peanut butter, and we were "fine" with that. But when they added the jelly back in, for the GBA, that wasn't us getting "extra stuff." That was us getting the full pb+j as was intended.

Big difference between that, and FF5. FF5 is a full peanut butter AND jelly sandwich. Already. On its own. It was complete in the box. The bonus content was a banana, thrown in randomly at the end. Which, I mean, sure. Okay. I like bananas. I won't say no to getting one. But the pb+j was already fine on its own. The addition of a banana doesn't add anything to the original sandwich. It's just empty calories.

When FF5 doesn't have the bonus content, I consider it a complete game. I don't EXPECT a banana. If they happen to give one to me, all the better. But I didn't sign up for one. Whereas with FF4, I kinda DO expect there to be jelly when I order a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

that analogy works for food. not for video games.
removing content no matter how bad is not a good mood.
what makes the most mad is that the took down the older versions.
if i could still get the old ffv isntead of this i would. but im forced to only get this version.
a version where they removed added cotnent from the gba version. a version thats over 10 years old.

i cant belive im about to make this comparison.
but oh boy.'

while its not on the scale of what bungie did with destiny.
it still feels like the same but on a lesser scale.
or heck take pokemon for an example. oras vs emerald. sure oras is based on ruby and sapphire but just like ffv the battle frontier was added content that added more to the post game.
no matter how bad the content its still content.

like i get its based on the original snes version but why not add in the content from the newer versions. it just makes no sence to not add it in. **sigh** it just feels like im playing an incomplete game no matter what way i look at it.
Bad content that's not good and never should've been added in the first place is not bad to remove. It makes the game feel better.
just forget i said anything -_-
