Stingray 'bug' still working

For those who are collecting blue magic or trying to get the dragon whisker to drop, the old quick save trick still works.

Stingray is one of the few enemies that gives Mighty Guard, one of the better blue magic spells. It gives protect and shell and float for your entire group. Finding the stingray is pretty annoying because he spawns in one specific area and is a rare mob. After 30 minutes of searching, I still wasn't able to fight him, but with this easy trick I got about 5 encounters pretty quickly.

Stingray only spawns in the coastal waters SE of the Phoenix Tower (basically right about the sunken Walse Tower). And only in that spot. It is basically a small peninsula.

The trick/spawn bug is this: Land in the water SE of Phoenix Tower, then dock right on that green peninsula. Quick save. Don't quit or reload or anything. Now get back on your boat and move up and down, basically hugging the shore. If you accidentally land back on the green, quick save again, then go back in your boat. After one or two encounters, Sting Ray should spawn. Now just control him, have him cast mighty guard while someone in your party is a blue mage or has the learning ability, and you got yourself mighty guard.

He also has a low chance to drop a dragon whisker, a whip that automatically crits against dragons.

Thank you! worked for me as well. What I did was land on the right side of the peninsula near the bottom and would just go up and down the two squares next to it on the right side. Then quick save when I hit land going up. Two maybe 2 or 3 encounters but would get him.

this isn't working for me.. I'm hugging the coast of the east side of the peninsula.. nothing but sagahins and thunder anemones and ibis

It has been a bit but I remember it being tricky and took a little bit to get it to work.

I ddin't know that trick, but grinding for Dragon Whisker, I found that simply going up/down gives me the encounter quite fast. I even had 2 encounters in a row :)

BTW while you are here, take your time to steal 1-2 Rune Blades. This weapon is very underrated because of its low attack power, but it is actually capable to do more damage then Brave Blade (and is a normal sword, not knight one)

I couldn't get it either during the last patch. Neither the quick save nor any of the recommended spaces (east side, south side, near 3 mountains, that 2 space part, nor Tule lake). I did end up getting 4 Dragon's Whiskers but it took hours. I did hear that the rate was bumped regardless but only from conjecture (no data which should be possible with the Unity thing).

it's not working for me. I did encounter a few stingrays but it's certainly not 2 battles after quicksaving on the peninsula
