If you played FF1 or FF4 they made a lot more use of hidden areas on many maps.
But in FFV they are few and obvious when you see a chest on your map radar in a dark area.
Also the hidden passages (all) fully appear as soon as you set a toe in them so not like you are stumbling through them without the skill.
In the original games, the passages would be marked with white lines, both for illusionary walls, and invisible pathways over gaps, making it clear that they were hidden passages even with the ability on. In this game, they appear as normal passages, making it impossible to tell that it's somewhere special to go. Sometimes, like in the mechanical flying fortress, they'll show up as transparent IF you're standing on them. At least that lets you know that it is indeed a secret passage.
However, in Exdeath's castle, they don't show the passages AT ALL. You won't see the various hidden gaps in the wall, even if you have the ability equipped.
Square/Enix really dropped the ball on this one, especially since this bug has survived a few patches so far. (And I doubt we'll see any more patches at this point.)
