And the only real point to stealing it is bragging rights, really. (has a purpose in the 3D version; unlocks a superboss in NG+)
That's the only game I can recall really benefiting from it though and it was only from bosses.
There are some games where you can steal useful items that can't be obtained easily, or at all, by other means. In this game in particular, you can steal Sirens, which are used it one particular room in the final dungeon to summon Flan Princesses to farm the Pink Tail. This is the only real use that I know of.
There's some pretty good stuff you can steal in Final Fantasy V and Vi, if you're planning on buying those when they come out. Shouldn't be hard to find a list on the web.
Note that the post-credits save currently saves the state you were in just before engaging the final boss. I haven't tried stealing from Zeromus, but in the III and IV Pixel Remasters, I still have the items I threw at the final bosses on my post-game saves. If the save doesn't account for the items you used in the final battle, it also might not account for any items you gained.
I managed to steal the Dark Matter in this new version.
However, it doesn't appear to save in the inventory after defeating the boss.
I checked both the the regular item inventory and the Key Items and the Dark Matter isn't there.
I was unable to steal it in Zeromus's first form, but did manage to steal it in the second form. I am not sure whether it would have made a difference.
In one of the games, possibly 9 or 7 (it's been a while), there was a monster that would repeatedly heal itself unless you stole it's held potion.
