version comparisons
What I really must know is: whats missing from this version compared to other versions?

I'm expecting bonus dungeons from other versions will not be present. That correct? Anything else removed/changed/added?

this is basically an updated version of the Japanese snes release of the game. it has an added beastiary, music player, auto battle, quick saves. it has no extra dungeons that weren't in the original game, as is the point of these pixel remasters. some minor qol improvements and nothing more.

It has ultra intense water fall visual effects.

I've only just gotten Tellah in my party, so not very far in but pretty much all the general cosmetic changes from the other Pixel Remasters are present. The maps/menu showing how many chests and items and showing where the chests are, the overall menu/post-battle window look, shop mechanics, the sound effects for spells (notably Blizzard continuing to use FF6's 'Ice' sound mixed in with the shattering).

Things like this seem to be uniform changes and I can only assume they'll continue throughout the rest of the Pixel Remaster series. I kinda like it, honestly. But if trends continue from FF1-3, optional content won't be a thing and it will be a graphics, music and translation brush-up of the original FF4 (I'm going to assume the Japanese version, not the US or "easy" version). This is what they've been saying it will be anyway, so I'm not let down by this. In fact I actually like it more because of it.

Some things I HAVE noticed that are atleast a little different from the original are that Dark Knight Cecil isn't strong enough to just steamroll enemies in the first dungeons anymore, and Rydia no longer dies if a monster looks at her funny. She also seems to have much better magic power, and can do decent damage with her spells instead of being relegated to healing outside battle and spamming Rod/Ice Rod during them.

I like the sprites way better than the PSP remake's 2D sprites, as they're more faithful to the original without going over the top like FF6 did. The portraits in the menu are really nice too. My one complaint so far is that the textures of trees and grass on the overworld look really... off. Like, too grainy or rough or something. Other than that, love the music rearrangements and other touch-ups.

Oh, and there's no dupe glitch, but there was really no hope of that anyway.
