Mod to restore the Purple Onion Knight (and some redheads) plus tons of other restorations.
I was pretty bummed that Final Fantasy didn't bring back the Fighter/Warrior's red hair, that Final Fantasy III has a pink Onion Knight and non-redhead Fighter+Knight, also that Final Fantasy II took so many liberties with it's cast that they don't match the original at all. So I fixed them all, along with some restorations on a few FF1 monsters. Took me a week, was a giant pain in the @$$. I also included a font fix that uses improved and official Final Fantasy fonts. Here are a couple of links to the mods, both links give the same file, so only download one, not both. Instructions on how to install the mods and some preview images are in the file the link downloads. Remember to back up your games before modding them. Remove the spaces on the links, since I can't figure out how to properly post a link on here.

You're the webmaster of Warmech's Domain, right? I used to frequent your site among others back in the day! :) Is it still around?

Hi, yes I am and it's always nice to meet someone who remembers that site. :) Sadly, it's not around anymore, although a google search made me find a backup of it is still floating around. Since nobody cares, I'll let you in on a secret, the site is coming back in a few months :) I will have it put online to preserve it, but I am planning a MAJOR (like FF fans minds will be blown by all the previously unknown information that I will be adding) section to add as a "bonus" to the preserved website, that section has taken me nearly a decade to put together (8 years is more realistic.) Big news if you are a FFXIV fan. :) Anyway, that's still months away, but hey, I finally told someone about it besides my wife. haha

I didn't see any option to include an image with post on here, I wanted to show my work with the initial post. Anyway, if you go to: h t t p s : / / w w w . n e x u s m o d s . c o m /finalfantasy2pixelremaster/mods/1 - you can see a screenshot and an image of some of the changes. Also, the mod is also posted here: h t t p s : / / w w w . r e d d i t . c o m /r/FinalFantasy/comments/p3lad5/mods_for_final_fantasy_iiiiii_pixel_remaster_to/

Ah, that's so great! ^_^ I remember back then, you said you considered taking the site down but your wife persuaded you to keep it up. If I may say so, your wife is awesome.

And it's a great time to revive the site, to coincide with the release of these pixel remasters!

Hi, yeah, she is awesome :) I know, I wish I had it done before the Pixel Remasters came out, but oh well, can't rush the love. haha

I remember, back around that time, the DS remake of FF3 had just been announced at E3 2004 (best E3 ever btw, Zelda trailer woooot)... but for over a year there was no information on it, and people started to think it was vaporware. Then at E3 2006, there was a massive burst of screenshots and information. I literally pranced and danced around like a giddy schoolgirl, I was so excited. Too bad that version disappointed on a few fronts, but all these years later, the pixel remaster has more than made up for it. :)

Wanna hear something interesting? As we all know, in the DS/3D FF3, you start as 1 character and the rest join up a little later, unlike the Family Computer and the Pixel Remaster versions where you start as all 4 characters. When I played FF3 DS before it was released, at Comic Con, you started as all 4 characters, instead of just 1, on the freakin' DS... I remember how surprised I was when it was finally released and I was playing in a 1 person party instead of 4. Not much evidence of this exists online, but with some creative searching I found super blurry (and super short) evidence of this, I still kick myself for only taking a handful of images of the FF3 booth at Comic Con instead of the game itself, although I'm pretty certain there was a Square-Enix employee telling us to not photograph the screens... I keep hoping some collector has that E3/Comic Con demo and decides to dump it for the rest of us to enjoy.

I remember those old screenshots that showed four characters in the Altar Cave, and a different battle background for the Land Turtle fight (more like the original). I still have them, as a matter of fact.

In my mind, the spirit of the WSC version lives on through the pixel remaster. I'd even like to think some assets, even just a few, survived from the WSC version (map tiles, battle backgrounds, perhaps).

Ummm, if you feel like sharing those old screenshots, I am very interested in taking a look at them. There's always some hidden gem out there and you might have some image(s) I may have never seen, giving me some clues to unknown info. It's one of my life's biggest pleasures, to learn FF things we aren't supposed to know. lol

As for the WSC FF3, that is my biggest video game heartbreak. I have a secret fantasy of breaking into SE headquarters and running out with the alpha version of FF3 WSC :) Then I hit up Capcom's headquarters and run out with every version of Resident Evil 3.5 they have. =D (My avatar on Steam is the face of the Hookman from Resident Evil 3.5, yep, that's the actual face of the unreleased monster of the unreleased game, even most RE fanatics don't know what he looks like...man, I'd give a pinky toe to play that game. Take one of the little toes, I won't miss it. lol)

Anyway, back to FF3 assets. I have some bad news, all the enemy sprites from FF3 Pixel Remaster come directly from the game Final Fantasy: Record Keeper, copy and pasted, not even slightly updated... :( I would have LOVED it if they used the WonderSwan Color sprites, a dream come true, but nope, we got that mobile game's sprites instead... Disappointing (but not surprising seeing as how SE has allowed FF to become a "cut corners" game series, but that's another conversation for another day.) However, there is a slight chance that Record Keeper used WSC sprites, my reasoning? The appearance of the Goblin's sprite in the WSC and Pixel Remaster/Record Keeper, they are extremely close, but without a super clear WSC image, we can never know for sure, unfortunately.

As for the overworld, the WSC FF3 overworld (dungeon) image is much more detailed on the WSC compared to the Pixel Remaster, so it's safe to say we didn't get WSC overwolrd graphics. As for character sprites, they definitely did not use the improved WSC sprites. As for the backgrounds, while it is possible they used the WSC backgrounds, it is unlikely because the Pixel Remaster backgrounds from FF1 and FF2 are watered down versions of the remake's backgrounds (wsc, smartphone, cellphone, gba, psp. etc...) So while they easily could have used the WSC backgrounds, chances are they watered them down too. Why do I feel this way, because of this image I made, get rid of the spaces on the link:
h t t p s : / / s e r v i n g . p h o t o s . p h o t o b o x . c o m /902785481927afc861826d2c7ebbdfef4d1e1152067f02a6c350aa7464e58712c5f80635.jpg <---while similar, they aren't the same piece of art. Still very possible that they just watered down the WSC backgrounds (after making a larger, fuller, psx resolution version, which just seems like extra work for a cut corners company, something they avoid.)

Man, I just wrote a book as a response. lol Sorry, I get carried away sometimes. :)

Not 100% sure, but I'm mostly sure that I made that FF3 image you just posted. HAHAHA priceless. Still, I appreciate you sharing it with me. Been a LONG time since I've seen that comparison image. (Also, I completely agree, the spirit of the WSC version is definitely in the Pixel Remaster, no doubt.)

nope, I was wrong. I didn't make that image, I made my own version with more accurate positions. I remember now, I was being really picky about that comparison shot so I made my own, file says it was last modified on Friday, ‎October ‎21, ‎2005. Here it is, in case you are curious: h t t p s : / / s e r v i n g . p h o t o s . p h o t o b o x . c o m /86765174096b86f1640bc5d4cae22dfcda33a5ec524beb9c9a2168057b2af0b869a9a39e.jpg (also, that was really good catch, the different background from the initial screenshots, damn good catch.)

Haha, thanks. I used to be crazy about removed stuff from beta versions of games. The most infamous of all is Ocarina of Time. I collected dozens, probably over 100 beta screenshots and wrote mock-up reports on all of them (plagiarizing Video Gamer X of the Odyssey of Hyrule amusingly enough; gimme a break, I was 11 years old at the time). I literally scoured the Internet for them, digging them off archived websites and so on.

I'd love to share the other FF3 beta shots I have with you. How should I do it? Upload them directly as "artwork" here, or Dropbox or something?

I'm so glad you made this. Console color limitations or not, Fighter will always be a redhead to me, just like how Shadow will always be a girl to me.

You have piqued my interest. He is Relm's father of course, but are you saying he, err... made some changes? Even that this is why he and Relm's mother split up? :O

So glad to hear that, at first I almost didn't release these mods cause I was starting to think I was the only one that cared that the Fighter isn't a redhead. lol Have fun!!! :)
