How is this compared to the First 2 Final Fantasy games?
I beat the first Final Fantasy and got stuck at the final boss of Final Fantasy II. I'm thinking of keeping FFII on the back burner and trying FFIII. I am curious if it will be as hard near the end?

Probably not. There's really no comparison. It's basically nothing like FF2, and expands greatly upon the classes of FF1.

Basically this.

And FFV is a great expansion on FFIII. There isn't a whole lot 3 does that 5 doesn't do better, in terms of game mechanics. Obviously, like most FF games, 3 has it's own unique story, but IMO the 3D remake is better than the Pixel Remaster in that regard.

Also, the final boss of FFII is a chump if you remember to stack your haste and berserk, and use the bloodsword if you have it. Even in the non-nerfed PSP version, he's disappointingly easy, and the Soul of Rebirth fights are the real end of the story.

Do you have Berserk and Haste? Berserk stacks. Cast it repeatedly on a single person. ;)
If you don't have them, you can buy them in the Jade Passage from the mage behind the waterfall. Just level Berserk up a few times.

Actually, if you have Yoichi's Bow, that casts Berserk when used as an item in battle.
And Masamune casts Haste 11!

Just Haste and stack Berserk, I didn't use the Blood Sword, mostly because I forgot and by the time I remembered the fight was basically over.

On FF2 I got stoned and grinded for an entire day till all my characters had at least 7000 max HP. Didn't seem to take that long. By then I was so powerful i beat the final boss on the first try by just stacking haste and berserk. I think it took like 6 turns. lol. So if you really want to beat 2 with ease it can be done. Just grind on that world island where you access the final level and level up all of your spells while doing it, especially cure which i got to level 15 and was curing like 3000 a turn.

Are there any areas where I can get supplies if I leave the final dungeon to grind?

I'm low on everything but have enough money to buy needed supplies, it's just most if not all the cities were destroyed...

Thanks everyone for the help.
FF3 cribs a bit from Dragon Quest 3 in terms of upping the game. Twice the locations, an elaborate job system, multiple world maps. No way could the franchise have succeeded if they continued with what FF2 attempted.

OP I'd say FF3 is the best of them on the NES. 1 and 2 feel very rough. 3 has a lot lacking compared to 5, and I'd say it's really only worth playing today for nostalgia and not for a great gameplay experience.

The SaGa franchise pretty much uses the FF2 formula exclusively, with only 1 game using the FF system of discrete character levels.

On the contrary, I personally think FF5 is a bit difficult and overly complicated. I find FF3's simplicity much more attractive for pure replay value... but that's just me.

ff3 does have the advantage of being plot-lite. There are very few event-flags you have to trigger.

The end game in both is pretty comparable. Especially if you unlock the final two jobs in FF 3. The Ninja and Sage jobs unlocked at the end of FF 3 will make you a god. I used two Ninjas and two Sages and just laughed my way to victory. One thing of note is that there are a couple bosses that require specific jobs to be used in FF 3 or you'll have a rough if not impossible time. I'll also add that most of the jobs are garbage or only useful for certain boss fights. FF V does jobs properly.
