Using items in battle
From what I'm reading you're supposed to be able to use rods and other similiar weapons as items in combat for free low-level attack spells? Doesn't seem to work though, is that only a 3D Remake thing or something?

Right, only Staves have this function in this version, not Rods.

Personally I like it better, as that feature was very overpowered in the 3D remake and especially cheapened Nepto's Shrine.

Rods empower their element, so spells of the appropriate element do more damage. Staves are usable, likely so White Mage, and later Red Mage and Devout, can actually end up doing at least a little damage.

light staff (so many enemies weak to thunder in this game that even this level 2 spell stays very useful), golem staff, and rune staff are very good for Red mage in this. They can equip light rod or ice rod to power up the thunder or blizzaga spells as well.

Should point out the spells from the staffs don't seem to be as powerful as the main magic I think but that is hardly a big deal.

Pretty sure only the right hand gets the boosts as well from what I hear so keep that in mind as well.

I'm pretty sure the spells the items use are based off of the user's INT, and White/Red Mages have MUCH lower INT than a Black Mage casting the actual spell.

Staves cast spells, rods strengthen the element of the spell.

I'm aware White and Red mages have lower int than black mages, but I did the comparison of the spells with red mages
