I suggest Fighter, monk, whitemage, and blackmage.
But you can also substitue two redmages instead of white and black mage. (But I mainly like to use white and black so their job levels get high. A black mage with a bow and arrow can do a decent amount of damage)

I recondmend at least 1 red mage cause you can get a weapon in the first castle that is useful and having 2 healers help and red mage can cast black magic. You def want a white mage to heal you. For the others I recondmend monk and fighter as the game hands you nunchucks and warrior armor and weapons so you want 1 of each. You could also not take a red mage and replace him with a blackmage

the options open up later on but for now thats what i recondmend. Def is an awful idea to keep your team as onion knights as they will always have 5 in all stats until lv90+

I went with Fighter, Red Mage, Red Mage, Black Mage the last time I played FF3...
But I'd probably have used a Monk in place of one of the Reds if I had to do it over again.

The game is stingy with black magic at first, so I'd say two warriors, a monk and a red mage. Only use a black mage and red mage when you get to the point where you need to frequently mini/toad yourself, as black and white magic only really becomes available then.

FF3 is designed around the right job for the right spot, theres definite places where it expects a certain class. The start of the game has red mage exclusive swords for example, theres the infamous 'four dragoons or get wrecked' boss, a dungeon that requires one or two dark knights, etc.

Salamander pretty much requires 2 healers. At least 1 white mage + 1 red mage, or 2 white mages. The other 2 characters just need to do enough damage to kill him before you run out of curas. The guaranteed way to ensure that is to have blizara, and you can also get blizzaga from gyshtal town (level 4 spell). If you got blizzagas on 2 black mages, he gets smoked pretty fast.

I nuked Salamander with dual Blizzagas from a BM and RM, Cura with WM, and smacked him with a Warrior. The game seems to want you to use Red Mages till the end of the Floating Continent, since thats the exact point they become obsolete for good.

Since it should be based on the NES Version...

Fighter, Monk, Black Mage and Red Mage.
With the Monk possibly being swappable for a second Fighter.

You don't necessarily need a white mage at the very early game as a Red Mage can do pretty much everything a white mage could, with better damage output.

okay i see i currently didn't have black mage in my line up just did one of each basically because i assumed red could do both but weaker

The best jobs to start the game are Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage and Red Mage.
