Opinions on Sage in this game?
So in the original FF3, Sage was the uber-caster that made all other casters useless. In this game, the mana progression is less than the Devout / Magus, as well as the Sage having lower INT than the Magus / lower SPI than the Devout.

All of that said, it looks like the Sage is worth is mainly as an upgrade to the Summoner. You lose some low-tier summon casts, but you gain more casts of Bahamut and Leviathan, which honestly in a serious fight is what you'd be looking to cast anyway. It also means the summoner can use their lower-level spell slots for utility and support, or for preserving your Devout's spells for boss fights.

And it's another character that can dual-wield golem staves and contribute to the Petrify the Trash game that the Devout (and the Magus with Omnirod) can play.

Anyone have other experiences with the Sage in this version of the game?

I was going to turn my Devout into a Sage to make it a Summoner/White Mage, but the lower int/spi and lower high level spell charges convinced me to keep a Devout/Magus combo. Especially since coming in the Devout should have some job levels and Sage would have started at 1.

Kinda disappointing how Ninja is such an obvious upgrade for melee damage, but Sage is...meh?

Sage is an upgrade for Red Mage and Summoner for OP's stated reasons. Magus and Devout are still much better at those designated tasks.

I kept, and beat the game with, my Devout and Magus. I didn't want to lose the spell casts, but in the end I'm not sure if I really needed them either. I think losing the 20-25 job levels would probably hurt more.

Then again, I also kept my Knight and Black Belt instead of upgrading them to Ninjas and did fine. Beat the game at 51, and only that high because I was grinding out the last couple of Bestiary entries.
