Unfortunately I do not have a fix for you, as I tried experimenting with different ways to possibly work around it, such as leaving the area and coming back, closing the game, Quick Saving, etc. I think your best bet may be to start over if you don't have a save data you can load from before entering that room. For whatever reason, the way you enter those kinds of rooms seems to have an effect on how the map loads. Later in the game, you can talk to Paul (the thief you rescued from Semitt Falls) with a specific key term and he'll give you permission to enter a treasure room in his house that was previously blocked by a wall. However, after having that conversation, it is possible to walk through the wall without interacting with it, which seemed to be the cause of the bug. I'm not sure if you did something similar here in Semitt Falls, but it's a very rare glitch as far as I can tell. This is actually the first time I've seen anyone else encounter it, other than myself.
I'm sorry I can't offer any more helpful advice beyond loading an earlier save (if you have one), but that's the only thing I could find that worked for me.
Hey. There is no need to say sorry! I mostly just wanted to know if this was a bug, or if I somehow had to get Josef to open the chest, or what. I have never played FF2 before so I wasn't sure. Thank you for sharing your experience and for the warning to be on the lookout for this in the future. I tried searching online for similar experiences but I only found one. It was for a chest on the Dreadnought containing some gil.
What happened was that I entered the dungeon, ran around the blue crystal thing mashing the confirm button, and then clipped through the wall into the hidden room. I tried opening the chest, left the room, and got Josef to open the wall this time. Attempted to open the chest again but no luck. I had one save just before entering the dungeon. Reloaded it, got Josef to open the wall before going into the room, and I still couldn't open the chest. Then I wrote the post above.
However, I tried again today and... now it works. I guess the game was still loaded into memory when I tried it yesterday? I still have the save before opening the wall but I can't replicate the glitch now. I guess something went wrong somewhere previously.
If anyone is reading this stuck with the same thing: Try turning your game and PC fully off before reloading your previous save. it's what did the trick for me.
