Just off the top of my head:
Metroid: 1986.
Athena: 1986.
Phantasy Star 1: 1987.
Forgot about Samus yeah she's probably top tier.
What I love most about FF2 is that we can essentially create our own builds similar to great games like Dark Souls, so Maria can really break the mould of the stereotypical female, fast, low-HP mage types we are accustomed to.
Just give her Guy's starting Axe and let her tear stuff up (albeit swing and miss fashion at the start) :)
FF1 was also a great game but I like FF2 most out of the NES games. And probably my fav nes game next to zelda.
She's not exactly an independent woman, she hitches up with pacman and has babies.
It's Ms.
