So... I'm at a loss. 1X Lamia Queen and 5X Coeurl...
Near end game. The Lamia Queen does status effects and the Coeurls one hit kill anyone on my team even if they miss. I take it there's some protection I'm missing here or something? Even if I kill 3 of them the first turn the ones that are left just annihilate my party. This is the chest w/ the Sun Blade at the Pala-however it's spelled castle near the end of the game.

Any tips here? Everything I've looked up on line says "this is an extremely hard battle". Seems near impossible to me. Then I look up a couple of GBA videos and that version only has 1 LQ and 3 Coeurl instead of 5. Those two extra are the literal reason for how hard this is lol.

The Lamia Queens drop Protect Rings that protect from instant death. The...Death Riders I think is their name drop ribbons. With those you'll be golden. The Genji Armor set found in Pandaemonium also protects various effects depending on the set piece. What might be another key to victory is upping your agility so you can act first. Throw a high ranking blink and shell to help if you can. If you get those items mentioned it should alleviate your struggle. Not sure how strong your white mage is, but if you have high ranked Ultima and other whm spells it should hit like a truck. Ultima's damage is based on the rank of your other spell ranks on that character.

Agree that having high Agility to act first will help and reduce risk of being ambushed.

DEFENSE
Coeurls have a Death-status effect linked to their attack that bypasses passive resistances offered by armour, so your best bet is to max out your evade chance with shields (not on your caster) + Blink + Blind in the hopes they miss. For their Blaster spell, throwing up Shell improve your odds of resisting. Barrier won't help given Blaster's special properties.

Lamia Queen's status effects are all spells - if you have a black mage with high rank Osmose (should have gotten this from the Ultima Tome tower place) to drain out her 340MP, then you can say bye bye to those nasty status effects.

OFFENSE
Both mons don't have resistances to status effects, so if you have a high level caster with Toad or Teleport, that can help remove more units in one round - all of them if you're lucky. Otherwise single target with your strongest spells/physical attacks is the way to go. Good luck!

Alternative to dealing with them is to have a well leveled Teleport or Toad spell, two multicasts of those could easily wipe the whole encounter. Do note most Weapons (Staves and Knives give the lowest penalty) and Heavy Gear will lower their hit rate due to penalties to Magic stats(Int for Black and Spirit for White) they give and don't tell you about.

Coeurl are the true bosses of the game because even Protect Ring does not protect from their Instant Death. Equipment alone won't protect from them, high evasion might but it could take a long time to grind.

Unless you are ambushed it's pretty much to kill them before they get a turn and, as long as there a less Coeurl remaining than you, each turn you revive everyone and hope they cast blaster and you are equipped with some of the equipment that block it completely. Don't bother healing since they will kill you in one hit anyway. It's a bit late in the middle of this dungeon but it's good to have everyone with Life to be able to revive everyone with only one character instead of one at a time with Phoenix Down.

If your evasion is not high enough, equip two weapons on everyone, might kill one more in a turn.

Thanks for the replies. With all of this help I beat them last night! I had been going w/ Weapon/Shield for the entire game on all my characters. Switched to 2 weapons and made minced meat out of them. Woot
